Arrived yesterday via my LoveFilm subscription. I'm struggling to muster the enthusiasm to watch it. Is it worth a watch or shall I just post it straight back?

It's an excellent film! But you probably need to be fairly awake to watch it - not the fastest moving film in the world, but an extraordinary performance by DDL and an excellent one from Tommy Lee Jones - two from many in a very good cast. A great piece on the Missouri Horse Trading that went on for Lincoln to get his amendment through. Don't be expecting any civil war battle scenes though.

Ah well the fact you mention the lack of 'battle scenes' has alone made the film more enticing. My initial reluctance comes from it being a Spielberg film, not that I dislike his movies generally, but I do find some of his attempts at dealing with history a bit too emotionally manipulative.

Philip French's review in the Guardian/Observer was excellent at the time fervouredimage and pretty accurate I think.
