Ooooppss.

Sounds pretty normal sort of idiot driver behaviour to me.
Did you have your video cam on? Prob not as its not a known dangerous section.

At least you werent run over by another vehicle that was overtaking you , that would be my worry.

Hope the knee and elbow sort themselves out quickly ( well at least the elbow) . My hands getting better slowly , but wasnt up to QE on Sunday but managed 20 miles along the SDW.

Update: bloke came round with money for new wheel, all very amicable.

Did you have your video cam on? Prob not as its not a known dangerous section.
Weirdly I did - but the battery ran out less than 100 yards from the incident! i don't think it would have done me any good to review it though, its bad enough with the memories of the shit and the "should've/could've" stuff going round!
Might've been entertaining for you lot though! First thing Lydon said was "Did you get it on camera??" 😆

Firstly to DezB - Glad you're okay, I've had a lot of near misses on the road with cars but have thus far been unscathed (on the road with pedestrians is another matter entirely) and any crash you can walk away from is a good one so you're doubly lucky.

He is trying likely to be trying to commit insurance fraud by not reporting the incident to his insurers

Eh? You're not under any obligation to report accidents to your insurance company. Settling something cash in hand is totally acceptable if both parties agree and for something like this might save DezB loads of time to get a new wheel and the driver loads of expense when his premiums go up.

Really sorry to be reading all of this Dez & I hope there's no lasting damage to your knee or elbow. Get well soon.

If your front wheel is that damaged, I would stronly suggest getting the bike looked at by a good shop. As the forks and frame should be checked, components too.

If its a carbon fork or frame, I would suggest a replacement.

Even quite small hits can twist frames and forks out of alignment. You also get ripples appear in down tubes, and cracks too. It might look ok now but these can fail much later. If a fork fails on you at 30mph, you end up rolling in traffic, it could kill you.

The driver wants protect his no claims discount with a quick payout. I would suggest doing this properly with an evaluation and quote from a shop, and a claim.

And the same goes for your elbow. I slammed skateboarding in a pool this summer, thought I got away with it, shoulder felt ok next day. But two months down the line it's feeling bad, it's not right. And it's getting worse.

Here we have some CCTV from outside my shop. This resulted in a twisted surly big dummy.

Yeah, you're right Charlie - I'll get the bike checked out properly. Even pre-accident I wonder how those paper-light carbon forks hold out, so I'd just be riding it stressed out if I don't get it examined.
Trouble is, I don't want to find out it's knacked! The way this whole incident went down, I was just glad the bloke admitted liability and paid up - I know a vast majority of drivers would have blamed me. Whole thing could've dragged on...
Hmm, I'm blaming myself for this way too much. 🙁

Charlie, regarding that vid you posted. How did the driver NOT see the Surley? Having said that im not sure that half in the road half on the pavement was the best place to leave it.
Did the rider get his bike sorted by the car drivers insurance??

I suggest you read the small print, and carefully read the questions when you reinsure

Bigyinn... Reported to police, they passed back insurance. Dave has a quote for his big dummy, driver started to deny doing it. Told police the reason she drove off was because I was kicking her car, and dave was trying to pull her out of it. That is why it's on YouTube... Someone in town heard of me attacking her car, got my iPhone out, showed them the footage. Cleared my name. Made her look like the despicable liar and crap driver she is.

+ thick, stupid, blind, shouldn't be allowed to drive...

Crash

If it had been, I wouldn't have needed a lift home - I would've just about landed on my doorstep!

Remember those violent thickies with nanosecond attention spans you were unfortunate enough to share a classroom with at school. Well even if you work in a field that means you never have to share space with them nowadays unless you are daft enough to shop in ASDA, they are still around and they all have driving licences.

I doubt intellect has a direct correlation to driving ability. Im sure there are plenty of people who have brains and still completely useless behind the wheel of a car. Even Wayne Rooney can drive legally....

Shame the local press didn’t pick it up, that’s absolutely staggering. Normally I’m not one for bullying old people, but... really? REALLY?

1) She has to walk past the bike to get to her car, so she can’t claim she wasn’t aware that it was there, unless she has the memory of a goldfish.
2) I’d question whether leaving the bike on double yellows is advisable, but she’s on double yellows too so she can’t complain.
3) She does a runner (I’m assuming she refused to leave details as the police ended up getting involved?)
4) She denies it
5) She then claims she drove off because people were kicking her car – to me, this is the most despicable element, making out that innocent people are the sort of people that would start randomly attacking a car, especially one being driven by a poor, sweet, frail old lady. This is particularly bad when it has the potential to impact on someone’s livelihood.

You know, I’d kind of have a bit of sympathy with her if she was simply an old lady whose motor functions and spatial awareness were fading a bit and she’d panicked, but the fact she not only denied it but then started lying to make herself look like a victim just makes her look like a vindictive, devious and manipulative hag. Shame you can’t crowd-source funding for a lawyer and sue the witch for slander!

Did her insurance pay out in the end?

Oh, and dangerously back on topic, glad to hear you weren’t hurt too badly, Dez, especially given what your wheel looks like! Nice to know that the driver was decent and took responsibility too.

+1, a little old dear lying through her teeth to police to get out of a blatant hit-and-run. Nice. She'll be scrawling graffiti over your shop next.

Surely she could be charged for something there? Hindering an investigation or something?

Glad you're okay.

I'd be wary of accepting money before you know the full extent of damage to you and the bike though.

I was hit in May, knee was sore, thought it was just bruised. Waited a couple of weeks, went on a gentle ride and was in agony. Turned out the crash had done some damage to the gubbins inside my knee. I've only just been able to start commuting by bike again.

Oh, and joing BC/CTC and let their lawyers take care of it!
