I had an incident at work a couple of weeks ago, stepped off a large concrete plinth onto a rock hidden under moss (in the middle of a woodland, so not entirely unreasonable for it to be there I suppose). The result was a big topple over incident, with a popping sound and nauseating pain. The X-Ray showed an old break which had healed with a bit of bone floating about in the ankle joint that used to be the end part of the tibia, the doctor thought this had moved some more causing a lot of the damage.
2 weeks down the line and I am able to walk again, although my ankle is sore and stiff in the morning easing off through the day. Still a bit of swelling and my calf/tendons at the back of my leg feel very stiff.
The question is, I guess, when would you lot think it would be a good idea to start getting back on the bike again? I have had problems with my left leg for a long time following a previous accident that manifests itself in a really bad pain in the knee - the best way of dealing with that is to strengthen the muscles by riding which makes life much more pleasant, so I really want to get back to it asap! I suspect this old ankle injury has something to do with that issue too, and anything that build support in said ankle must also be a good thing.
I am feeling somewhat irritated as I had planned on starting running the day after I went down hard! This trying to turn ones health around is fraught with difficulty ๐
(I am tentatively thinking a bit of a jaunt on the bike this week, perhaps Kung Fu/Tai Chi/Baguazhang next week or the week after that and perhaps the running starting up a week or two after that if my leg hasn't fallen off)
As long as it doesn't aggravate your injury I suspect cycling should be good for your recovery. The martial arts and running might be less of a good idea though.. but I'm no doctor.
Not quite the same but I managed to do some damage to one of the muscles in my leg last weekend falling off my bike. I still can't walk properly but I managed to go for a little spin on the road bike today and feel great for it.
Cool - I can't bend by foot right back yet (kneeling down is agony!) but I think I will try a ride during the week and see how I go. Just something light and (probably) road based as a first ride I think... off road will have to wait until I can actually rely on that foot being put down hard without resulting in collapse!
You are probably right about the running and martial arts, I will play that by ear and wait until things feel right. Probably around the same time that offroad riding starts becoming more doable!
