My wife was using her mum's Kindle until it broke. I want to buy her a new one but will she be able to get access to the books that she bought through her mums account or is it start from scratch time?

Yeah you just log into whatever account you want. The Missus and I used to have separate accounts, now we just use the same account across our different devices

the other alternative is to take the digital rights off the books, using [url= https://calibre-ebook.com/ ]calibre[/url]. Then you can load them onto whatever you want.
+1 for Calibre. Allows you to convert your Kindle stuff into any format and read on any device.
Option 1
Make mum and her a family. Both accounts get all books bought be either.
Option2
Log device into mums account and download books
Then log it into her account
I think books are good for 5 downloads.
