I've listened to about four of this guy's shows and I'm confused.
Is he a self -indulgent arse or does he run an original entertaining show studded with little regular delights from a platform of great music?
I started with the latter opinion but am drifting to the former as the days pass.
its taken you four shows?
Entertaining knob imo.
Used to listen him when on breakfast. Liked the music he played, shame he liked the sound of his own voice more than I did.
Found him massively annoying.
I used to hate him on breakfast and was really annoyed when the booted Radcliffe and Maconie off the afternoon slot - but I really like him now I've listened to him for a good while.
Entertaining while pretending to be a knob and has a real passion for music.
I like him,but then I would say that as I have been on his show a few times.
I can also be an entertaining knob,it's easy. 🙂
Love his afternoon shows. Good balance of chat / features and some great tunes. Having said that I can't really fault the weekday line up for 6Music.
All radio DJ’s are knobs. They should just have stations for talking where they all waffle on to their hearts content interspersed with the depressing news and weather. Then stations for music that just play music with none of the talking bollocks to spoil it.
This is why I love Spotify and view the radio a bit like terrestrial TV. A thing that old people use.
All radio DJ’s are knobs.
Only old people call radio presenters DJ's 😉 👍🤣
I prefer Marie-Anne Hobbs.
And I can't stand Marie-Anne Hobbs.
All radio DJ’s are knobs. All radio DJ’s are knobs.
Well, given...
This is why I love Spotify and view the radio a bit like terrestrial TV. A thing that old people use.
...one might say that it takes one to know one.
Let's not start a nob vs knob debate.
I listen to Spotify / CDs / LPs for hours but I like to break it up with a bit of chat and bollocks.
I'll give Mr. K. a few more tries.
I like radio as it throws up music that would never appear in my 'Because you like this, You might like this' Spotify feeds.
I also don't have to think about it while at work, it's just on.
Try a podcast instead maybe? At least then you can choose the subject and the person chatting.
And err... radio presenters is what they were called when radio was first invented grandad. Nobs or knobs is what they are known as 😉 and I’m definitely a knob, just not in the same league as any radio orator. Don’t even like the sound of my own voice.
I like Keaveny's show a lot, it's the kind of irreverant gibberish I like on in the background.
For actual music I prefer Mary-Anne, but I could listen to her all day without a problem.
I used to enjoy listening to him back around 2016 or so...around when Moyes left Radio 1 and for a few years after...but Radio 6 MUSIC I thought was always about MUSIC primarily and so I tuned in to listen to the leftfield type music that they'd play back then. However it seems to have become more mainstream, more talk too. So for talk I listen to podcasts and for music I'm listening to Radio Paradise, switching between their four different channels...Eclectic, Main, Mellow and Rock. Really impressed with Radio Paradise as they have very high quality lossless streams and a really good mix of music. Sorry who were we talking about again?
I enjoy lots if the music he plays, he can be quite amusing, but impressions need to go and as soon I hear the Bergerac theme I invariably stop listening to the radio and move to Spotify.
I imagine he'd be a decent chap to have a pint or 2 with though and he does cycle to work!
Didn't like him n breakfast but don't mind him in the afternoon. In contrast my missus hates his patter.
Quite like Lauren in the morning and could generally listen to Mary-anne all day.
They have become a bit mainstream and playlisty though
He is a cancer that has made 6 unlistenable. I only tune in if I lose reception of Caroline in the car ...it’s either a disco record, someone talking or an advert for disco music or someone talking.
I love him and love his show. His taste matches mine so it's blissful. I don't find him annoying at all.
I've tried to get on the Open Arms a few times for a request but not been picked
The week day line up is great. I can't fault it apart from what I'm listening to right now - Lamaq. He plays some trash amid all the britpop. I try and book conferences and webinars from 4pm so I don't have to listen to Steve
Get rid of Liz Kershaw and lamaq and the line up is perfect. Worth the license fee on its own
After a week of breakfasttime bewiderment many years ago I became a Keaveny fan. Has off days but don't they all?
More radical was my utter dislike of Craig Charles which has now changed to 'Yea, Saturday 6 o'clock, its @CCfunkandsoul time!' 🙂
I like him.
Always have.
Cheers me up in an otherwise boring world.
I like Keaveny’s show a lot, it’s the kind of irreverant gibberish I like on in the background.
Precisely. It's undemanding patter and music.
I’m not sure calling anyone a ‘cancer’ is a particularly nice thing? A bit strong when he might actually read this being a cyclist and all.
Like most of the presenters on 6, he's grown on me. He used to really annoy me, but then one day I kind of got it; it clicked. Now I look forward to his show if I'm working. The only one I can't listen to is John Peel's son. Nope, not at all, dunno why. .. also Steve Lamacq too whilst I'm at it. Difference being I respect Lamacq, I just don't like his tunes. Or voice.
Nob. I don't find him funny and, while he is into his music, his taste is much less interesting and more mainstream that most of the other DJs on 6. And I don't find his interviews very informative. That said, he's obviously not stupid - his annual shows with the Eno and Brian Cox are really interesting. But his usual shtick is just timesome - it's 3 minutes to 12 minutes to 4. If you're giving me a time check make it useful not so I have to use mental effort to work out what you've said.
I really miss RadMac in the afternoons. Fantastic interviewers, great with callers, much more interesting music. We actually get up earlier at weekends to listen now and catch up if we miss it.
Like the music he plays but I do find him annoying...bored of the self-deprecating "just blundering through without a clue" style 🙄
He is a cancer that has made 6 unlistenable.
Bit harsh... but would make a cracking ident for his show actually.
Onions.
Cats! Maybe cats operating in gangs.
has made 6 unlistenable.
definitely has for me. He usually goes off pretty quickly and it stays off until Riley at 7. Used to listen to RadMac whenever I was near a radio.
He’s become a bit average since moving to the afternoon. But after the pain of a morning of Hobbs talking absolute nonsense, his show is normally a relief.
Quite liked Laverne until she moved to breakfast. Now don't.
Mary Anne. Yeah, great music. Wife can't stand her voice.
Didn't listen to Keavany in morning as the adverts really put me off, but now like. Can't believe they moved Rad Mac though. Who I love.
Lamacq. Nope. Only listen if there's nothing on Radio 4.
Marc Riley. Brilliant.
Main thing that really annoys is hearing the play list stuff. Again and again.
I gave up listening to 6 - far too up it's own arse.
That said - RadMac are good, Keaveney is pretty decent, but how anyone can listen to the constant drone of drivel that pours out of MAH, is way beyond me - unless you actually subscribe to the absolute guff she spouts
Quite like him but preferred him on the morning slot. But preferred Mark and Lard more.
The one show I really look forward to on 6 Music is Gilles Peterson.
Just waiting for Brant now to come along and describe how much he hates Liz Kershaw.
Agreed on MAH. I like R6M generally but it's teeth-itchingly earnest at times, and she's the worst!
Used to love Keaveney in the mornings, then went off him, but he's better now. Mainly for the guests. But I have to turn it off when they do the handover bit before his show. I'm sure they get on well enough but listening to the pair of them bantering is weirdly uncomfortable.
Both Radcliffe & Macconie and Chris Hawkins are unable to speak without gibbering. They have got worse recently to the point of being unlistenable (the music choice is still good for the former not so much for the latter).
OP once you have got into the 'in-jokes' Keaveney becomes more tolerable.
I go through periods of finding him annoying and periods of chuckling away to him.
Also, I've texted in several times and he near enough reads out what I text every time! I've never really texted radio shows so that's nice.
He had Supergrass on a while back and I texted in about the time I saw them coming out of the Brighton Marina Asda, and they chatted about that so I was suitably happy 😊
I desparately try to get my work colleague to accept 6 Music. He's so completely MOR Radio2 though. Sometimes I think we're making progress, but Shaun always makes it much harder.
Some people will just never 'get' him.
I have got into a bit of a wfh routine.
Start between 7 and 7.30 and listen to Chris Hawkins on playback, using the Sounds app. That way I can fast forward any nonsense or crap tunes.
I then do the same with Lauren Laverne’s show.
If I finish the two playbacks while MAH is still on, it’s spotify until after lunch when I either listen to Keaveney live, or sometimes playback, so I don’t have to listen to the music news.
Liked the music he played, shame he liked the sound of his own voice more than I did.
This, for me.
I like him. I like that fact he just waffles and doesn't take him self too seriously.
Can't stand Mar-Anne Hobbs. Her voice is so ****ing annoying. She just seems to be saying "listen to me, I'm better than you, but I'm talking like this so you don't see how pretentious I am".
but I’m talking like this so you don’t see how pretentious I am
She doesn't really do a very good job of covering up how pretentious she is
God? No. Gideon Coe is God.
Poor old MAH. I really like her. But I get why others may not. I think being a natural night-owl, but forced by convention to be awake and working before noon I kind of have my guard down being still half asleep. She has a nice soothing voice and plays some cool stuff. I generally find I can't even listen to the radio before whatever time she's on. Maybe a bit of R3.
Why is most radio so thoroughly obnoxious in the morning? They could learn from the club DJ's with concept of 'warming up'.
Not a big fan of Keaveny, but he’s a broadcasting genius compared to Moyles; there is a man who’s consumed with admiration for the sound of his own voice, keeping the music content of his programme to the absolute bare minimum.
When I was driving for BCA, our team driver insisted on having Moyles on the radio, a good inducement for me to stick earplugs in and go to sleep.
I like having the chat in between the records, it’s what radio is about, LaLa has really interesting, intelligent guests on, unfortunately I rarely get a chance to hear more than about forty minutes of Hawkins, Laverne, Lamaq and Riley, depending on shifts going to and from work.
The main advantage of 6Music is it doesn’t use algorithms to tell me that just because I liked the last record it played I’m going to like all of the others! Even during the short periods I get to listen I can hear one or two pieces of music I’ve never heard before, and which get me wanting to hear more of their music, followed by a song I’m not keen on at all. - if that’s ‘being up their own arse’, good!
For times when there’s nothing on I want to listen to, like a Saturday afternoon, for example, my phone has nearly 300Gb of music on it, that’s several months or so, and I’m adding to that with the new stuff 6Music plays, like Samantha Crain, who I heard tonight, Claud, Grandmas House, Jeanes, Albertine Sarges, NewDad, Pom Poko and Dry Cleaning.
There is no other radio station that plays such a wide variety of music, of that I’m sure.
Cats! Maybe cats operating in gangs.
I think that was what turned me from not liking to liking his show.
He used to infuriate me - think i've gotten used to it now though...
Ideal choice of radio 6 presenters would be Craig Charles / Huey / Iggy Pop on permanent rotation.
