I agree with Perchy on both points, always park the SRV the opposite way round to driving out, though you do need to be 'a lot' further forward than you think. The phantom is the best, as you just bump against the front strut.
Painite mining is super easy, with some of the rocks @ >60% the hold fills up so quickly. I have been going to Hyades Sector DB-X D1-112, planet 2. Which is usually ~100Ly from a decent sell spot, though there are carriers on station.
Just happened to have 30t of Void Opals last night and found a sell station for >1.6M Cr!
@Perchypanther when are you buying your carrier?
Matt
when are you buying your carrier?
I think it'll be a good while yet before the "Panther's Perch" sets sail.
Maybe it'll be a Christmas treat to myself.
I can't find the system you listed on INARA, Hyades is good, but kinda on the wrong side of the bubble for me.
Matt
I can’t find the system you listed on INARA,
Sorry, Typo on my part...
GCRV 1568.
Planet AB1
Ring A
Cernan Dock.
"I'm so aloooOOOOoooonnnnnne...."
Where the hell are you?
Matt
I'm alone too. I'm about 300Ly outside Colonia heading to Sag A. It was my wife's idea, but it's kind of ruined the game as it's so booooring. Maybe this weekend we can sit down and sort it out.
I played RDR2 last night.
Yeah, your about 2k ly behind me.
It's shit.
Proper shit - I'm properly scanning to SagA and then I'm going to sprint home. If I don't make explorer elite I don't care.
Tbf work has been a nightmare and I'm getting home shattered and can't be arsed to do anything.
The workload is dropping now so I can start to get a wriggle on. I have taken a v long route to Colonia having a nosey at stuff.
Oh, 6k Ly actually.
I also plan to hit the edge of the centre before I sprint back.
Sol is 24.5k Ly away (in a straight line).
You madmen! You aren't selling this very well.
Tonight I turned my Cobra MkIII into a search and rescue ship. No sheilds, but all the systems for all manner of distress call and rescue shenanigans.
Matt
I kinda just flew around for a bit, need a decent base next to a primary star that isn't Deciat. Preferably about central to Tod, Felicity and the Dweller. Not that either are particularly far I guess.
Got bored and trolled a human in a Type 7, just flew up his arse for a bit, was fun tailing him as he tried to throw me off, considered interdicting but thought the better of it, didn't want to rip the hole out of it.
This is not one of those occasions where I recommend what I have. My base Kuwembaa is rubbish, it has terrible modules for sale, it is the 'wrong' side of the bubble, but it is the native planet of my adopted faction Kuwembaa New Labour and the only one they control, for now!
I spend a lot of time near Beimech/Arque area working for Terra-Ex Astro Corp and there are some good systems there, much more central, but still low traffic.
I have just unlocked Palin, so might G5 Dirty drive the thrusters on the Viper and go troll some gankers tonight. It has 660 boost!
Matt
Bought an srv to see what they are all about. Now carrying plenty of Iron and Sulphur for Flic and have a decent amount of Polonium. Should have done this ages ago, oh well.
Also need to find a low grav planet to recreate the stupid asteroid jump from Armageddon.
I'll keep looking for a base, it's just annoying me and I'm probably over thinking things. Garay Terminal is fine for now, if something decent comes up then I'll reconsider.
Oh I got interdicted by an NPC whilst DSSing Deciat 5, that was amusing.
I lost my internet connection whilst mining and got kicked out of the game last night.
When I logged back in an NPC pirate appeared and demanded I hand over the Painite.
He nearly got what he asked for. The Corevette has two huge hardpoints of Pain.
I handed that over instead.
😆
Not sure these pirates think it through!
Matt
Galactic Center!
We're only 90 jumps away but my wife is watching telly... If your'e still there when we arrive I'll jump to open and say hi.
Who is the squad member at Colonia?
Thought it was you?
Servers bugged to high heaven, probably for the best, on my second rebuy tonight. First was a rammer outside the station, second was piledriving the back wall to evade scanning cos I forgot the AspX handles like wet shite.
I'm docked on the fleet carrier pandora - is it ok to sell data on a carrier?
At SagA.
You can sell on a carrier, but it takes a cut, 25% I think. Can be better than losing it all if things go wrong, especially if you not so much worried about the cash as getting your discoveries recorded.
Yeah, I think it's the 75% percent is better than nothing argument.
@squirrelking the Asp X is not keen on slowing down is it! I've lost count of the number of asteroids I've smacked in my miner.
Matt
I’ve lost count of the number of asteroids I’ve smacked in my miner.
Lithobraking.
That's a thing.
Petro-thrusters?
I drop the cargo hatch for extra braking on the AspX.
Pretend I'm doing handbrake "not quite" turns.
Yeah, I'm not bothered by the cash, it's only 60mill credits - will give me an idea of how close to elite explorer I am (there I bloody hope).
I’ve just got 10 jumps to get back to the bubble. Last docking was at Thor’s Helmet sector on 71% pioneer...will I have got Elite? Soon find out 🙂
11k ly got me the last 50% to Explorer Elite (and possibly beyond).
Molgrips - worth me hanging around for you before I continue exploring?
Just saw this - sorry Saccades.
Made it to Sag A*. Looks cool. Docked at a fleet carrier, started selling data then found out there's a starport at a system next door, so I'm heading there. I'm in solo cos I don't want to get ganked. If I sell all my data though I won't mind cos if I die I'll get teleported back to Colonia or somewhere.
I'm still there - will be on later tonight if you want to meet up for a photo.
No one but carriers and I over the last two nights.
I'm at Explorers Anchorage currently. We can meet up sure. Is there anything to do out here before I head back to the Bub?
Maybe later we can do a bit of CQC? Anyone else?
What time, I'd be up for some. Just visiting engineers at the minute.
Matt
Too late. I'm nearly at the edge of the galaxy - the top edge!
You can see Andromeda, a couple of other galaxies and some other very very large extra-galactic objects (Magellanic clouds?) from up here.
Ha, that was my plan - I'll head down so.
You'll get a better view going down I think.
Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
Just visiting engineers at the minute.
So, is there any typical pathway for engineering, I know that's a question with many variables, but do folks do it as they happen to unlock engineers or go after a specific type of upgrade? There are so many permutations that it's bewildering.
I've started some FSD updates via Farseer and some thruster changes via Martuuk. I figured I'd go as far as I can with FSD upgrades to ships. What's the usual next steps? Shields? PowerPlant? Thrusters? I'm not much of a fighter so weapons lower down the list.
I figured I’d go as far as I can with FSD upgrades to ships.
....and then get the Guardian FSD booster which is good for (up to )another 10.75 LY range?
Unlocking this was probably the gameplay i've enjoyed the most in ED.
What’s the usual next steps?
I found thruster upgrades to be the one that made the next biggest difference. Transformed the Anaconda from an unsteerable, slow whale into something altogether more agile.
@perchypanther - thanks for those tips, sounds like I'm going in a sensible direction. I'll investigate the Guardian booster now that I've got all my FSD materials lined up.
Yes, some gameplay in engineering would be good, it's a bit grindy at times, but I expected that. There's some missed opportunities with scanning beacons & data points, surely they could be breadcrumbs into grander missions or subplots?
I agree with the earlier comments about the AspX's lack of braking, does anyone engineer brakes for the AspX?? Maybe mine just need to "bed in" 🙂
does anyone engineer brakes for the AspX?
That'd probably be the thrusters.
There aren't really any brakes. It's just reverse thrust applied by the Flight Assist to make the ships feel all arcade-like-atmospheric-aeroplaney rather than the proper spinning-out-of-control-proper-spacecraft Newtonian, zero gravity model that underlies it.
There is no accepted path.
My process has been
FSD
Multi-cannon
Shield
Armour
Thrusters....
But most of that has been due to the order that you have to unlock them. Find something you need and work back. I only tend to do them one at once as I get sidetracked doing something else. Next one is Liz 'Landmine' Ryder.
My focus is BGS at the minute, I'm trying to take control of a system for the first time. I may be calling for volunteers to fight in a war in the near future.
Matt
rather than the proper spinning-out-of-control-proper-spacecraft Newtonian, zero gravity model that underlies it.
It's not that proper. If it were you'd be able to continuously accelerate 🙂
If it were you’d be able to continuously accelerate
...backwards.
Which would make running away from pirates a lot more fun.
Yes, but if you could continuously accelerate you'd never be able to catch people you were pursuing. So to counter that you'd have to make lasers realistic so they would have a range of thousands of kms rather than just 3. So if you just sprint away you get zapped, so you need to take evasive action.. keep some chaff handy.
I may be calling for volunteers to fight in a war in the near future.
Happy to help but you'll have to wait for me to get back to civilisation.
