Ok so wed night my two wheel drift resulted in a few moments of me sliding along on my leg taking a bit of skin off.
Now have a graze approx 10x20cm with some nicer deeper scores across it. Warm shower, cotton buds and a toothpick got most of the gravel out.
So now do I leave it open to dry or keep it covered? Changing dressing thrice a day due to weepage.
Just as well I left the kneepads in the van, they'd have got dirty.
Pics or it didn't happen..
Ouch. Boots do a wound healing gel which is really good for these kind of injuries. You can use it with or without a dressing (with is probably more convenient)
Sudocrem, shorts that finish above wound and leave open would be my preferred approach, for at least the weekend.
Oh the joy of picking gravel rash scabs.......
It'll scab over and go really "tight" if left open (though seems to be all below the knee rather than on it which means it'll pull less), set against having to dress the thing and having it weep/smell odd/not be able to show to chicks ... to keep it moist (which will heal a bit faster).
Oh, yeah. Disclaimer:
(... if it's a shallow as it looks and you've got it nice and clean)
Thanks bongo. Yeah apart from some deep stuff top right where the blood's coming from its just shallow.
If possible, I usually leave them open to the air. Scabs quickly and heals quicker. Down side, gets real itchy and can lead to scars. Upside you get to pick the scab off (is it just me that finds the pleasure / pain thing strangely alluring) and chicks dig scars (right?). I am not a medically trained professional
Looks very much like you've kneeled on a jam doughnut that you dropped in a muddy puddle.
Go to a minor injuries unit to get it cleaned thoroughly and they'll put some proper dressings on it.
Or they'll make you wait hours while the doctor sits at his little desk doing **** all while you drip blood all over the floor , then stitch you up with all the crap still in there so you get blood poisoning
and if it seizes up, and starts to go green or black round the edge, get medical advice quickly, i didnt with anover the bars superman and landed on arm, cleaned it in a peak district stream next day agony, infection, and antibiotic power and a deep clean by a nice nurse, every day for a week at work, lucckily i worked at a hospital at the time.
I'm afraid it's leg off time.
Doesnt look too bad, at least you didn't get a disc rotor to the leg!
if you feel competent and have some nice sterile dressings then clean it up (boiled but cooled to tepid water) etc, if not that is what minor injuries is for. They will normally give you some spare dressings to redo it after a day or so as the crap will be coming out as it stays nice and moist under the dressing.

that. can get some silicone dressings which will encourage weeping, keeping it infection free for a few days.
At least, that's what they did to me elbow. which was half that size. they said i wouldn't have been able to do a decent job at home.
3m do an absorbent dressing. Clean the wound really weel, clean it again, then slaver on the antiseptic cream. Cover it with the appropriate size dressing and tape it on. Leave for 5 days without changing it and then remove, it will have healed nicley. I've done this five or six times and never had a problem or needed to change dressing. BUT you need to make sure its clean.
Remember to get out of bed slowly! The first time you leap out of bed with the sheets stuck to your leg and pull the entire scab off, we'll be able to hear the screams from here!!! ๐

This. I got similar gravel rash on my left shoulder in Canada. Cleaned it up and dressed it myself. Sorted. Two days later I was hurting and burning. Went to the hospital and got it cleaned and dressed properly. Bliss.
Go get it checked.
Another +1 for minor injuries here.
They'll clean it up and stick some nice dressings on it that will make it heal better - they heal up without scarring if not allowed to dry out.
Did an otb to face In my early twenties, and scraped a fair bit of cheek off. Still got my boyish good looks thanks to this type of treatment.

Luckily you won't even see a Dr for such injuries at an MIU.
Just out of minor injuries. Nurse was happy with how clean I'd got it. She's put the dressing they'd use for burns on it due to size and depth. Back on Wednesday for change of dressing. That's my mid week ride ruined then.
Excellent!
Oh except for the ride bit.
Sexy!
Came off last year . . .

Looks a lot better now - went to minor injuries and they used burns dressings. But it took a while and a few visits due to the three holes I'd managed to gouge into it

Great pins ninfan! 8)
adjw is currently winning this thread
I think Ninfan's lingerie has slipped down his leg.
Another vote for MIU - when I finally went in, I was told that they can grow "just about anything" from a road wound swab. Mine was rotten after 3 days.
That's the nearest ive got to winning anything bike related!

Not just chicks who dig scars, those are pretty impressive, and after a proper get-off moment as well!

I'd like to say it was some extreme ride . . . But alas I was just racing the boys to school through the woods on our morning commute!
In my defense i had just done the Sandstone way so was probably a little too much in mtb mode when really I was riding my croix de fer with road tyres . . . It all went horribly wrong on a gravelly corner.

It's a good look ๐
Wiping out whilst racing the boys to school makes you a great mum ๐
Plus as above Sudocrem, definitely one of the product knowledge benefits to come out of having had 3 kids
Sudocrem
You can't use a feline hair styling product for healthcare.
!? Confused. . . And there was me thinking it was for nappy rash and other skin irritations
I believe that may be a reference to a rather amusing thread from a few years back...
Go to minor injury drop in clinic if you're unsure OP.

I carried on riding with mine - the dressing stayed put. The only struggle was bumpy stuff, just because it was a bit sore - in particular the bridge over the estuary at Barmouth, I had to resort to riding with one hand but it was easily doable.
As long as you have spare dressings I'd give it a go ๐
(Obviously not being a qualified health professional I can say what I like ๐ )
You really should get it looked at - it looks broken (the link that is ๐ )
