what software to transfer DVD films etc to a Touch?
for a mate, honest...

Handbrake do a version for Windows these days - see http://handbrake.fr
Handbrake works well assuming the DVD isn't copy protected.
After a lot of messing about and huge amounts of time spent trying to get this sort of stuff working, I found it much easier to torrent DVD's already in touch format. I own the DVD's but by protecting them they have forced me to support pirating.

DVDDecrypter will rip your dvds to a single contiguous VOB file.
Excellent bit of freeware.
From there you can use any number of converters to turn it into the appropriate MP4 file at an appropriate bitrate.
Handbrake - no probs after it asked me to download VLC...
Handbrake used in the std Touch settings set in program.
Very happy with results of DVDs of TV series and films owned and converted
