I'm after a new laptop. We've currently got an old Samsung netbook (NC20) which we love, but is really getting a bit too slow. I've clocked this for sale at St Jean Louis, but I've no idea if it's any cop or not, and reviews seem thin on the ground.

Can someone who's up on what's what in the world of computers give me a steer? I'd like to be able to plug it into a monitor and use it like a proper PC for odd bits of work, use it for general internet use, and plug it into the telly to watch iPlayer and so on.

Well, if your criteria is

I'd like to be able to plug it into a monitor and use it like a proper PC for odd bits of work, use it for general internet use, and plug it into the telly to watch iPlayer and so on.

... then you can narrow your selection to "all of them."

Using it as a movie source the best way of connecting to the TV would be HDMI, which this has built in.

I know very little about AMD's mobile offerings so couldn't comment on their ability compared to the Intels (anyone else care to comment here?), but even a really low-end modern CPU should be able to cope with the arduous task of viewing a couple of websites.

Hi, its not bad and is a new model.
You pay a premium here for it being skinny and lightweight. Is skinny and sleek important to you in a laptop?
What do you use it for?
Do you require powerful processor OR long battery life?

There are some great laptops for £400-500.

Also windows 8 comes out in just over a couple of months time...there will be windows 7 bargains to be had!

Tell us what you want to do with your laptop and I am sure the collective will give yo u a smorgebord of options (and then tell you to buy an iPad).

I wouldn't want a laptop over 14 to 15 inch. They're just hard work to move about and use on your knee. And decent battery life is a must, as otherwise the power cable will just get tripped over and knacker the laptop. Been there, done that...

Otherwise, it will just get used for fairly basic computing, remote Citrix access, possibly the odd massive excel spreadsheet, viewing large PDFs and a bit of simple photo meddling, but that's about it. I know I can do all that on almost anything for sale today, but I'd like to do it quickly and easily.

An iPad isn't going to cut it. A modern NetBook might but specs don't seem to have moved on greatly from the NC 20 we already have.

this is a very nice laptop but a bit more: http://www.johnlewis.com/231653224/Product.aspx

Almost tempted to sell my new XPS 15 to get one.

We have an older version of this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005FYBGQI/ref=asc_df_B005FYBGQI9109201?smid=A3003UW1JJRG8T&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22218&creativeASIN=B005FYBGQI

really good batterylife and good quality fit and finish.

Google ultrabooks too if your budget is a bit higher as these are sleek and have long batterylife.
If you wnat massive batterylife and lightweight then perhaps an IPad is not a bad suggestion, its my main internet device these days, though its not great for editing spreadsheets.
