"It's shit" implies to me that it's a fact rather than an matter of taste.
"I don't like it" suggests that it wasn't your cup of tea but someone else may like it.

I’d disagree with that statement. I love the pedantry on here. Both are my opinion. Just because it doesn’t meet your personal rules (which I think are shit by the way) for expressing oneself through words doesn’t mean I’m claiming to have any authority. Re: the "it's shit" vs "I don't like". I can see (hear) that Amy Whitehouse is an accomplished singer but I don't like her work. It's not to my taste. Some people might take that disinterest as me saying her music is shit but they'd be wrong and misunderstanding what is actually being said.
