Do you need to be in Kendal? Try heading over to ambleside or stavely (both with great bike shops - biketreks and wheelbase respectively), and better pubs!

The Brewery Arts Centre, south end of town.
Most of the rest are soulless Wetherspoons clones as you say but The Brewery is great.

Get to Staveley, the eagle and child is nice, and there's the hawkshead brewery hall.

tis in Station Yard/Rd. if coming from North miss left turn to Kentmere and take next left turn in village centre, then straight ahead . If coming from South right turn at shop(on left)and keep right into Yard.
Just looks like a big industrial unit(it is!! ). To the right are all the small arty crafts and bakers shops. Straight ahead and to the right is brewery, cheese maker, round the back you get car parking and Wilfs Cafe.
It is one way turning left and going behind Wheelbase to park

The pub along the road at Ings is reputedly very good, own beer etc.

First off,Kendal is no way a dump!!tis a lovely place to live. The Brewery arts centre is good, nice food and good beer, lots of entertainment.Burgundys, probably the best beer pub in Cumbria if you dont want to be squashed by fat beardy tourists(watermill at ings???)dicky doodles off main street near bodycare, good beer and live music almost every night,Bootleggers on finkle st nice chilled bar good music and if you want a proper drinking pub walk down over the river and go in The Castle.Or you could go to ambleside where admittedly they have a good bike shop but the pubs are crap and expensive!

Wot frog farmer says. Burgundys is nice.
The Station is OK for food. The real problem for kendal is the lack of decent restaurants.

POSTED 1 HOUR AGO # REPORT-POST

Not wishing to cause offence but you are in danger of sounding like the typical city boy meets small town reality and could suffer from classic "incomer" syndrome

Got to admit good restaurants are a bit thin on the ground in Kendal, but the New moon is good,if you want a good curry without a doubt the Eastern Balti on wildman st is very good, you will be hard pushed to get a better pizza than the ones in the brewery, but the trick is to get just a couple of miles out of town and you will find some great eating places.

lived in keswick for 3 years, abbleside for 6 months then kendal, ok you cant call it a dump its just not as nice (or as full of grokels) as the rest of the lakes and ok and the pub arnt the same class but you can have live music (bootleggers or dick doodles/brewery) and get a desent kebab , its swings and roundabouts, kendal has what the rest of the lakes dont,
