I want a pocket device that plays songs. After much ado, it's an ipod. OK. Now I also want device that plays videos, cripes, that's narrowed the field down a bit. OK, ipod it still is. Classic or an ipod touch, or an iphone. Right, now I want a phone that does browsing as well as the other two. Are there still two options? Even if there were, the iphone comes head and tails above the rest and get this, I'm a macophile, I don't like their computers at all. But handhelds, sweet. Way better than all the blacklberrys I've used, the nokias and everything else. Yes I'm sure other manufacturers are hot on the trail and will be there in 6 months but I bet they're not so slick. or app loaded to the gills

I ate a nice bit of Sunpat on Kinsmill and a nice Lavazza with some Cravendale (I don't take tate and lyle). Of couse I used a Denby to stop crumbs getting on the Wilton, on my Fatfaces, or the DFS.

I thought i'd check my thunderbird on the fujitsu, making shure the Li Shin was plugged into the MK. There was only spam so I opened Mozilla to post crap on STW.

Well, I've managed to get the unlock code from BT, so I now have a fully functioning snazzy 'phone thingy. With internets, music, videos, etc. And I've learned there are loads of little apps for it. It really is quite a nice 'phone, I have to say.

Cost me £29.99, as an additional upgrade cost, when I took out a BT broadband deal in September. I've left them, because of their failure to provide a service as advertised, so it's cost me just £29.99 (I never paid a penny of the BB charges, 'cos it was sooo shit)! Result! I saw a used one on ebay t'other day, went for about £130 or something silly.

It's not as flash as an iPhone, and is only 2G, but it does loads of stuff. I'm happy with it. And it will work with any network.

If someone gave me an iPhone, I'd be well happy, but I'm not about to go and spend all that money on something I can live without.

What does surprise me is the number of people who can be arsed to knock it. What's with that, and why do you give a ****? Are you telling me it really bothers you when someone refers to their phone as their iPhone? I mean, really? What's your reaction when someone says something really offensive. Lighten up, you'll die young.

I find it annoying, just one of those little things that niggles, like people who eat with their mouth open spitting food about, or who interrupt when someone is talking. Doesnt ultimately upset me, or stress me, it's just mildly annoying and pointless and deserves to be pointed out as ridiculous, as it is. I suspect this inner demon that wishes to voice his opinions on such small things has been released by spending time on STW. From this point forwards I shall refrain from the use of STW apart from evenings when there's no riding/surfing to be had.

I think GrahamS sums it up best. FWIW, I haven't edited the iPhone sign-off, partly 'cos I'm too lazy, partly so that people are aware that I'm not sat at a computer, so an immediate answer will probably not be forthcoming. I had a Nokia N95 prior to the iPhone, and frankly it sucked in just about every area. Battery life is woeful, the GPS is virtually useless, web browsing is painful, the camera is almost useless... I could go on. At the moment I've got apps that allow me to track routes with the GPS, get up to date weather, check movie times, get tv schedules and set-up my sky+ box, get info from Wiki, read any of the hundred or so ebooks I have on disc, browse STW and contribute to the forum, listen to music, take photos and tweak them on the phone...

This is an example exactly what is clever about the iPhone. If a techy person has an N95, they can upgrade the firmware, which fixes the battery life / gps issues listed above, and can download software to do all these things you're talking about, in some aspects it can even be slightly better than the iPhone (although web browsing is not quite as good). But a non-technical person like you, you'll play a little bit, discover it is fiddly to get started, and not get anywhere. Whereas with the iPhone, even a non-techy person can use all the features.

The depressing thing is that so many of the problems with nokia user interface stuff would be so easy to fix, if they just had one or two good UI designers involved in designing a UI for a phone, rather than seperately designed UIs for each application on a phone.

GrahamS; no, mine's a HTC s710, which was an extra £29.99 over the s620. Glad I paid the extra, because if I'd only gone with the s620, BT wooduv demanded it back, when the contract was cancelled. In fact, they cooduv charged me for the unlock code too, so I've done pretty well, I think!

I like it. Not as fancy as an iPhone, but it does the job. I dunno about the OpenZone thing, probbly, 'cos in't that open to everyone? The Fon thing, probbly not. But it works with open Wi-Fi hotspots anyway. Not that I'm really bothered about having internets wherever I go. And I probbly woon't want to use it anyway, as if I were in such places, I'd mostly be with a friend or whoever, so I woon't be fiddling with me 'phone. It's rude.

Still, if Steve Jobs dropped a steaming brown one in a small, white plastic box I'm sure plenty of people would queue around the block to get one then spend hours on forums telling everyone how much better than any other steaming brown filled white boxes it is. Mind they'd carefully skirt around the poor battery life for the supply to the turdmatic tumbler as well as the remarkably large amount of money they spent of it.

If you really, really, really want an iPhone, buy a Nokia 5800.

If you just want a mobile for phone calls and have chosen to ignore/don't feel you need other functions then the iPhone is not targetted at you.

You fit the iPhone user profile if you want to have the functions of other devices integrated in something that has great ergonomics and feels good to use. I couldn't go back to a regular mobile from any other vendor without downgrading in some areas, I don't have to compromise with an iPhone.

They were released in the UK in November 2007 and in the US back in July 2007 (the seriously hardcore Jobbies were booking flights to New York for theirs).

I own an iPod BTW (two actually), just wasn't overly impressed with the size, weight, short battery life nor the inability to upgrade the memory to something more suitable to my needs (I wanted a phone to also replace one of my iPods as a music device).

Yup, if you are in open-access Wi-Fi.

The contract gives you unlimited 3G access (for when you're not near wi-fi) and free usage of "The Cloud" and "BT OpenZone" wi-fi points.

I [i]think[/i] the BoltOn does the same for other mobiles, so might be useful for your BT one, but I don't know for sure.

Ordered mine today.
PC user and not a fan of iTunes [i]at all[/i] however having used my brothers iMac and MacBook I really came to like the Apple operating systems. I then had a shot of a mate's iPod touch and was very impressed.
I went to the o2 store and spoke to two separate assistants who suggested that the BlackBerry Curve would be a better option. I then read the details of the 3.0 upgrade and decided to go for the iPhone anyway.
I will be trying to get to grips with iTunes so as to make as much use of my new toy as I can.
I'm quite looking forward to it.
