How can you write something so achingly beautiful about drowning at sea? Its just gorgeous...
I can't fault most of the above choices (Dusty Springfield and Nina Simone especially), but would like to add Skin from Skunk Anansie to the list.
I recently found a CD copy of Paranoid & Sunburnt and am still amazed at the energy and range of her voice.
