I'm slow in posting this. I did it on the 1st of Nov so prove to myself that I could carry on after Inktober. And since then life has got in the way and I've done no ink drawing.

[img] [/img]

I've started practicing the Loomis method of head drawing. It's slow going. I may have to ask for his head and hands book for Christmas.

Well here's my stuff...

[img] [/img]

Standard pencils, plus some derwent charcoal pencils and a white charcoal pencil. Ordinary rubber, putty rubber, cheap pilot automatic pencil (rex grip 0.5) and a knife for sharpening the charcoals. I need to find more charcoals and some french pencils.

[img] [/img]

This little a5 book is what I like to take on the move - has an elastic strap and loop for pen or pencil. Can't remember where or when I got it.

[img] [/img]

...and these are some of my pens. Nothing particularly fancy or special.

Oh and I generally prefer to sketch on tracing paper, unless I have a specific reason not to. It might just be a hangover from doing lots of reworking of character designs and the like, but I do still like the way that takes most mediums.

If I decide to take a pencil and pad with me I will take literally one pencil. At home I rarely use more than a HB, maybe a 2B and 5 or 6B and maybe the 8B.

So, is using the tele unforgiveable cheating, or acceptable? 😆

tbh I'm just using it to get used to proportions and stuff, I'll eventually ditch it.

Here's an example, how much should I be ashamed of myself? 😆

I'll ink this up over the next few days.

traced

judging rough values pre inking.

[img] [/img]

I will do a freehand version of this afterwards too, I've got a freehand version of the bardot one I did similar to this on the go also.

As a training exercise, useful, or not?

Here's my arsenal.

[img] [/img]

pretty sure I've got a box in a cupboard some where that might have some coloured pencils, and other bits and bobs too, maybe some water colours and some brushes. I'll need to look those out, they'll be 20 years old mind you, so may not be worth anything. My brother has some acrylics I can have up his, so might grab those a some point too, out of curiosity.

In the context of the thread - anything goes imo.

As a training exercise, useful, or not?

Personally speaking, I think it's a backward step and not constructive to technical development. Unless you want to be producing photo-realistic artwork (which is a stale, pointless and reductive enterprise) the ultimate goal is sketch what you see to any level of accuracy you desire, without resorting to other tools.

Very very hard to get there but it can be done. To my mind ( and this is just my opinion) but the process of painting and drawing should start of loose and drill down into detail and finish. Tightness and accuracy should come as a result of focus and work, not be the starting point.

As an analogy, trying to front flip a bike before you can jump.

What do you think?

tbh, I'm with you, which, I think, is why I continually call it cheating, I know myself... I dunno, at the moment though I think there's an aspect a bit of a self gratifying thing, something need to get over, ie doing the reproductive part and trying to impress myself, but there is some thinking behind it too beyond that..

I just know that when I do go totally freehand I have this distortion issue that I really need to fix, so it's not so I can always create photo realistic stuff, or even attempt to get to that level(which I'm far away from), and it's not where I want to be. I want to have a more expressive style, so as mentioned, I'm doing a couple traced and then doing freehand versions afterwards. Just to train myself into understanding likeness.

Dunno, it's not something I'll continue much longer, as I say the only reason is that I'm aware of a certain deficiency I have, so just curious to see if doing a couple of these will help fix it.

I guess the proof is in the pudding, next time I do one completely freehand from scratch, I guess I'll see if there's been any improvement. It's only for these portraits, as well, likeness is key I think, with other things, less recognisable things, tbh I really don't care whether something looks exactly the same, a subject is really just reference there, as it should be.

I take your point about trying to jump ahead too fast, noted on that.

I should also mention I'll never try and hide methods used, if I used a trace to begin something, I'll say, I don't believe in bullshiting myself or others.

What do you make of this btw, is yer man talking out his hole? 😆 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hockney%E2%80%93Falco_thesis

Tracing, nothing wrong with tracing. Its what you get from it or what you need to achieve.

As...Picasso said: Good artists copy; great artists steal.

But, I prefer a more loose apprach to my artwork, probably because I get bored to easily if the detail start going on to much.

A watercolour done during a ride break earlier in the year. First time felt in many sketches that I caught this particular wood. Well in my mind anyway :).

I suppose that is all that matters unless of course your selling stuff.

Great stuff, just thought I'd pop up to say still enjoying drawing, and experimenting, but nothing I feel the need to share.

Just thought I'd say, I tried tracing a photo for proportions before filling in the face and shading - was much quicker and more accurate but I didn't enjoy the process. Will stick to just trying to improve through repetition and learning from mistakes.

That was oil pastels. Not something I enjoy using tbh, but I was happy enough with the results there. Normally our life drawing classes were broken into short sessions, but that was probably two hours. The short poses are easier on the model too I guess.

Here's a wee 5 minute Scarecrow job just to have something new to post. It's permanently Halloween in my brain 😉

Yeah I think that's the right approach because obviously drawing is a hobby, but I think a big part of hobbies is study and improvement. You can obviously improve and get better at tracing but if you spend too much time chasing that dragon you'll only ever be able to work from precise reference.

This is something I've talked at length about with artist friends and colleagues and I think we were all basically on the same page - use as much reference as you need but don't become reliant on it. A recurring comparison was that of Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo. Both artists used life reference and photo reference extensively but one just used it purely as a starting point, the other is a slave to it.

I should have recognised that tbh, I used them for a still life in my higher art class, was terrible imo, but still enough to get me a B with 25 words in the history of art bit! 😆

cheers, there's a few **** ups about it, mouth and under that about the chin in particular(not to mention the obvious bit bottom left of the mouth where I picked up the wrong weight of pen!), but I think overall it was a worthwhile exercise though. Now to ditch the tracing... 🙂

actually noticeable looking at that source image now, my tele, where I leave the image up as reference, blows out the image a far bit, hmm interesting that, now I look at that there there's some really obvious things I should have done. might need to ditch the tele and use the comp in future..

Been a bit lax lately but will do some more.

I have a question about rotrings. Do you need to keep the vertical when drawing or can they be held at an angle off 90?

They don't seem to require any special angle that I can see, I just use them like any other pens. I think I prefer the cheaper Steadler ones tbh.

No angle needed on the rotrings, they are heavier and blacker than staedtlers though. Slightly different type of pen, worth having both I think.

That's class. I found a cow skull on a ride the other day, kind of stood around looking at it for quite a while. I was puzzled what to do with it but stuffing it in my jersey pocket and hucking it 40k home was out of the question.
