I have an item for sale on Pinkbike, guy says yes & will pay via bank transfer. I've sent Acc no and Sort but hes asking for name on card and branch name. I don't want to assume to trying to steal my fortune but I have a small alarm bell ringing, as I dont need name on card and branch name to do a transfer elsewhere.
Depends on what Internet banking system he is using. That information will be on the online forms of some.
account and sort code is all you need.
you can work out branch from sort code.

Tell him an incorrect name on the card? As you don't need it to make a transfer it won't be a problem if he is genuine. If he isn't genuine then he can't possibly do any damage if he hasn't got the correct name.
Name may be a useful check in case there's a typo somewhere. But don't hold me responsible...
Name on account and/or reference - depends on his banking software.
But tbh, I'd want the account name in case of a problem.
