It was a ron atkinson moment. i'll be surprised if Richard Keys survives this.
Its a shame andy Gray wasn't more vocal as he is a complete burk.

It seems less sexist than the annoying '2 women with colds' ads that Boots has on air at the momemt.

When you say that you think that a woman assistant referee doesn't understand the offside rule, are you suggesting the male ones do - all of them, all the time? Is this something you just think, or something you know - based on evidence?

I'm hoping that our dearest lodders is being sarcastic. After all, as a Liverpool fan, surely he would have been delighted to see just how well and sharply Sian Massey applied the offside rule yesterday. I can only imagine the abuse she must have had to take from the home fans after ruling Merieles onside for Liverpool's first.

Still...football and misogyny. Hand in hand really.

Good one Loddrik, but you gave it away by including 'sexist' in the title.

its rather laughable that anyone thinks ANY trained ref "doesnt know the offside rule". Any argument about it's implementation is almost certainly not about the refs understanding of the rule, but the difficulty in judging the location of two fast moving objects simultaneously whilst they are not in the same field of view.

There's only a finite set of rules to a sport whether it be football, rugby or Hockey (my old sport) etc. It's not difficult to learn them. In fact it would improve the quality of most games if more people (like the players, commentators and supporters) bothered to learn them as well as the refs and umpires.

Hockey

๐Ÿ™‚

Keys and Gray won't see any proper punishment for this though. Funny, I always had Gray down for an absolute cock but thought Keys was kinda ok.

Loddrick in misogynistic shocker.

Ah well, at least he hasn't resorted to calling her a 'pig' yet, so things are improving slightly.

it's a better game than that Oirish Table Tennis thing with the sticks and broken kneecaps. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hockey's actually a really nice game to umpire. The rules are not particularly subjective and are clear in definition so most players understand them properly. Certainly at the level I was playing/umpiring at.

Probably because you get a "nicer sort of person" playing it. ๐Ÿ˜›

my Irish left back

Did he ever try to rise the ball into his hand or go off and do a solo run with it balanced on the end of the stick?

yes. funny that.

He could also flick it the length of the pitch. Just as well there's no offside in open play in hockey as the long flick is the equivalent of hoofing up field to a goal hanger...

I find it funny that some people think they're somehow superior because they understand the offside rule, as though it's something incredibly complicated that only an elite few know ๐Ÿ˜†

Personally I never fail to be amazed by how neanderthal some people can still be. Personally I think they both need to get the bullet as an example to others who see this as a "minor gaff". In essence it is no different to Ron Atkinsons racism, and has no place in our society as far as I am concerned.

Vote with the off button kids. Its the way forward.

What about that rule about turning? I always found that pretty vague. After all you've always got your back on someone haven't you?

there's no such rule about turning. misconception ๐Ÿ™‚

It's called obstruction. As long as you dont move into the space of the attacker ("backing in") or cover the ball with your stick during the tackle, or bring the ball under your body during the tackle (all obstructions) then you're fine.

If she hadn't let the Torres goal stand I might have been shouting at her, as it is I think she's wonderful - and would think the same whether she was a man or woman.

See charming Karren Brady this morning complaining about sexism? Yeah. Do me a favour, love,"

If he was not being ironic with that statement then he deserves to be sacked. Poor judgement and yes a Ron atkinson moment

I see no reason why female referees should be any better/worse than males ones.
No one understands the offside rule since the active /inactive first phase second phase interpretation IMHO

Can somebody explain to me why football would be such an awful game without the offside rule?

On the original point, who else reckons the female assistant referee almost certainly understands the offside rule better than misogynistic commentators?

Somewhere about the second "or" you lost the argument about hockey rules being straightforward.

You're an ignorant bigot Loddrik. I seriously doubt you have the capacity to have 'thought' anything. Grunt and respond to basic stimuli perhaps.

in simpler form then for footballers the rule goes: "dont use your body or stick to block a legitimate tackle of the ball" HTH ๐Ÿ™‚

In fairness, it was a was he/wasn't he black and white. There was no question of interfering with play, or any of that bollocks that's come in recently.

But, on replays, it was shown that her positioning was spot on and she saw the Merieles had beaten the trap.

โ€œIf a player isn't interfering with play or seeking to gain an advantage, then he should be!โ€

- Bill Shankly

I'd rather the offside rule went back to the original application.

I misread the thread title as "Sexiest Sky Commentators"... imagine my disappointment, etc.

Football commentators make condescending comments about women in the sport. Slow news day, I assume.

I think the thing that you've all missed is she got the decision perfectly right, while they got it perfectly wrong.

EDIT: Just seen that comments were made before the game, not when the big offside decision was made, still need to go though

They both need to go in my opinion

aracer, without the offside rule the game would essentially become a stalemate. if a member of a team can basically stand on the opponents goalline, one of the defenders would go and stand with him, etc etc until every player was in the penalty area

Theywould just leave a big fella up by the goalie perhaps 3 or 4 [goal hanger] and just hoof it to them meaning the ball would always be in the air. the game wouold be less skillful and less entertaining. IIRC they had no offside to start with and changed due to it just becoming a long ball game with no midfield

I probably am a sexist bigot but I'm happy with that. Just for the record, I don't hate women I just find them incredibly irritating. My wife knows this and just blanks it.

As for women officials at Mens football matches. I don't agree with it but that's my view and people are entitled to their views are they not...?

If women are so keen to be involved in football, they should referee womens football matches.

As for not knowing the offside rule, I'm not so sure myself these days...

Mattie H - spend a little more time here and you'll realise I am impervious to criticism so I wouldn't waste your breath.

Not if they are totally irrational without any foundation and are obviously sexist / rascist / etc

why don't you agree with it?

then they should just bring the goals closer together and reduce the number of players ๐Ÿ™‚

I know, we can call it five-a-side. Small pitch, 10 players, no offside! I'll make a killing....

The only thing worse than female match officials are female football pundits. Has anyone ever tried to listen to Jackie Oatley in 5live? I have to turn the radio off.

Unless if course they are seriously attractive.

I also find that when I am listening to a football phone in I have to turn the volume down when women phone up.

I don't know what you're trying to infer from that. Because I'm not a bigot I must like the films of Kate Hudson? Don't understand the connection.
