Have got myself a new project/toy. Mainly for helping with access at the coppice as well as allowing me to sling oily chainsaws, muddy dogs, food-splattered children into without worrying about the two-tone leatherette.
Looks better from a distance, up close it looks every one of it's 25yrs of age. There's plenty of work to be done to the body panels, hinges, window rubbers etc. But mechanically it's brilliant. 1988 200 TDi engine that the last owner paid a bundle to have moved over to a new galv chassis.
However, top of the list of things that needed sorting was the gaping hole where the gasket should have been on the exhaust manifold. Although I'll take on most practical challenges Ive never before worked on an engine. At least with a landy engine it's of a technical complexity that I can have a crack at and requires no more complicated specialist tools than a range of hammers.
Manifolds off last night, old crapped-out gasket out, new one in this morning and everything back together again and it only bloody runs!! 😀 😀 😀
Off to give it a proper test run now...
I got the water pump cleaned and working at my father-in-laws. Raised my arms in acclaim, took a while for anyone but the fish to acknowledge.
Good looking project: no engine management systems to let you know if anything is wrong?
Needs more spotlights 🙂
what year was the 200tdi fitted ... its not an original 200tdi if its an 88
its only a year newer than mine... looks nicer in bonetti grey though
shame about the chequer plate rash its sporting.
is it a geniune CSW or a conversion - if its the former its LEZ compliant if its the latter then its very very difficult to get them to recognise it.
Now you can park anonymously in the waitrose in Malvern town centre...
Looks lovely. Hope you pair grow old happily together, a Land Rover should be for life. [pedantmode]its not a Defender, it's a Land Rover 110. Be proud to own a 'predefender' Land Rover, if you will! (Mines a 1986, and I get a tiny bit picky if someone calls it a Defender. Not as bad as when it gets called a Jeep, mind you! [\pedantmode]
Want. want want want want want.
Awesome, STW needs more Land Rover threads.
can fit about 40 pheasants on the bonnet of that thing. good work
That grass is in a shocking condition, truely woeful. You should be ashamed of yourself
Nice one Stoner....proper mans car
I was driving along the other day and thought...hmmmm....I need a 110/defender....chuck bikes in the back. Kids can climb all over it, don't have to worry too much when the winter kicks in....yep...I'm definitely chopping in my current car and buying a landrover...
Spent all day happy and excited.....got in from work and had an investigation....
....obviously this being Switzerland, like everything else....they are silly money...even if you can find a diesel one.....
One day...one day...
trolls better watch out ..... stoners hunting !
Hopefully he's no wasting his time hunting, but sorting out that pathetic excuse for grass!
Glad you got the house and most of the associated jobs done. We'll expect to hear tales of Land Rover fettling for the rest of your days now. You have a British built millstone right there.
OMG OMG OMG.....
is this [s]Mrs [/s] Stoner?
Yes.
Like that truck (as i believe LR [s]geeks[/s] enthusiasts refer to them) - enjoy!
"Like that truck (as i believe LR geeks enthusiasts refer to them) - enjoy! "
pop over to landyzone and call them "trucks" see how long you last
the usual retort is - is it a scania or a daf ?
Landyzone? no thanks... to my astonishment the place was less welcoming and cliquey-er than here. Lasted two posts! Bunch of @@@@s not interested in sharing their experiences or knowledge to a newcomer...found another forum where they were. and they seem to to call them trucks - sorry if you're on Lzone Trail_rat - I know you'd be happy to see a newbie right...
they can be like that. however jamesmartins a top bloke for knowledge output :d
tbh i use SLROC more.
Try LR4x4.com for a slightly friendlier Landrover forum.
I'm very keen to get another 110, as soon as funds allow....
trail rat - no idea when the 200TD1 was put in.
As you rightly point out in 88 it would have been a 19J originally.
It is an original SW though
(VIN: SALLD H (110") M (Defender 5 door Station Wagon) B 7 (I think it has an R380 in it) EA325xxx)
Checker plate is staying - I think it's load bearing now 🙂
Lamp bar is coming off, I shall refurb it then put it on eBay.
The bulk head is a bit rusted at the A pillars - going to grind and patch that. The bulk head in the seat wells/engine bay is still just about OK, but will get kurusted/painted/waxoiled of the summer.
Im afraid it's called a "Defender" because it is "Fender" from one of Son#1 books.
When I get all geeky about it, I might too wince at it not being called a 110". But not till then.
Back with some ramps from dad's, so I shall change all the fluids later this week. Oh joy. That's £100 of juice. At least it runs much more quietly now that the exhaust takes the approved route out of the block...
Oh, and those ridiculous wheels are coming off, for some 6.5" steels and some new mainly road style rubber.
sharkbait - 😉 with the self justification. But in my defence I did take the freelander down to the coppice the other day and tried to drive it in and out. Without a low range, diff lock, bit of clearance...it was...fun. And there was a distinct air of eau de clutch when I got out.
Shouldn't be a R380,
Easy well to tell is where's Reverse
R380 R is under 5
LT77 R is left of 1
if it was an 19j and it still has its original box it "should" be an lt77
"Oh, and those ridiculous wheels are coming off, for some 6.5" steels and some new mainly road style rubber."
just stick ATs on .... all the difflock in the world wont help if you cant grip - you really wont be doing alot of road miles in a 110 unless your a midget !
People mock my frontera i have just now for a beater but with a set of ATs on the rear it was pulling pick ups on road tires out of ditches for its living in the winter 😉
infact for the jobs your describing id just leave those tires and wheels on till they are worn out.
Those are quite expensive tyres I gather (£125 a corner) but only 1/4 tread left, and Ive been given some rims which I can refurb. I have my eye on some ATs on ebay ATM - I already have AT2s on the freelander.
Wont be doing more than 100 miles a week, but only 4 of those will be offroad.
Again, you're superior geeky knowledge wins tiger/trail rat 🙂
The R380 had come up in a conversation (because there's a 200 in there), but yes it's actually the original LT77.
1/4 worn - stick em on ebay - youll get enough money for new tires.....
big beefy treads go for stupid money even when perished ive noticed - i keep looking for cheapo offroader tires i can abuse for a bit - it never happens even knackered ones go for silly dosh.
i would normally say dont discount remoulds for offroad but itll be much nicer on the roads with some BFG ATs than remould insa turbos.
1/4 left, not 1/4 worn.
Im going to choose between £200 on 4x kingpin kmc remolds and 5x nearly new AT2s on eBay if I can get them for less than £250.
I concur; BFG ATs for the win. A fit and forget solution; usually last better than landrover steelwork, and very effective in most situations with a bit of commitment behind them...
Insa turbo remoulds on my daily driver 90 here, grip and handling are spot on and only £60 a corner
Have you been trailer hunting too?
Back to your OP, wire brush the threads of the manifold studs, then soak them in plus gas before you attempt to remove them. If you can get a hold of some flank drive sockets (snap on stylee) you'll stand a much better chance of getting the nuts off without losing too much skin. The good thing with a Land Rover engine bay is that there is a ton or room to work in. Whipping the bonnet off is dead easy too.
not yet, but I covet my mates tipping, twin axle Ifor Williams 😳
Has it got the complusory "One life, Live it" stickers on it?
At least your handy for Eastnor if you want to take it for a spin, pity Mayhem's not there this year - guaranteed mud. 😀
Has it got the compulsory "One life, Live it" stickers on it?
no ****ing chance!
I do seem to be getting a lot of random waves from other Landy drivers though. It's just like when driving the T4 campervan 🙂
That's camaraderie you dont get with a Ford Mondeo 😀
This was our 1986 ex-RAF 90, around 275,000 miles and in superb condition. Had to sell it as it was sitting outside doing nothing and costing money and we needed cash for a new boiler, sold it to a bloke from Wales who had zero mechanical sympathy, was a rubbish driver and said he just wanted something to run into the ground. *sob*
That's [s]camaraderie[/s] unreliability you dont get with a Ford Mondeo
You bought one because you've run out of toys.
Be honest. 😀
There are loads of reliable, cheap 4 by 4's out there. If'd you'd wanted one, you'd have bought one.
They're a way of connecting with our past 🙂
You can pretend you're Livingstone whilst listening to recordings of Merlins and watching The Dambusters on your iPhone whilst waiting yet again for the AA. 😀
You bought one because you've run out of toys.
pfftf, working vehicle I'll have you know! 😉
Im going to need a bigger trailer though. This is 1/18th of what I need to get back from the coppice. And arguably I ought to do it in even more trips as the trailer was looking v unhappy with that amount on it 😯
Yes dear, of course. 🙂
Honestly, try model trains, or classic Meccano.
All the patriotic feelings of home brewed heavy engineering without the repair bills and endless disappointment.
Don't ask me how I know......
Still want a Morgan though. 😀
One word: Woodworm 😉
