Its was made fairly clear during the scottish referendum that the SNPs view of citizenship was really pretty simple - if you live here then you would be entitled to scottish citizenship. Of course the SNPs view may not prevail but its likely. I think there would be other routes and IIRC something like "strong connections to the country" ie family or similar was also suggested. It was proposed to be fairly wide so that getting citizenship was easy but not available as a flag of convenience

Only if you are separating the Scots from the Picts etc. Scots are part of the grouping currently known as BAME as the are minority ethnic within the UK. As a caucasian myself I’m thinking of moving back to the Caucasus and re-establishing my right to citizenship, though I could become Indian as I am Aryan according to one school of thought currently out of favour.

As you alluded to, Scots aren't even a homogenous ethnic group. They're a bastard mix of Basque gingers, Anglo Saxons and Norse.

How do they decide who gets to play for the Scottish rugby team ? If you take out the requirement for being good at playing rugby. Actually, I don't think that is a requirement on reflection. It must be just about being Scottish.

They make them walk along Princes Street.

If they feel like a foreigner then they’re probably Scottish.

Hels. One or more scottish grandparents or 5 years residency ( used to be 3) tim visser played for scotland and was proud to be the first dutchman to play for Scotland. He never called himself scottish

Its a very odd nuanced and peculiar thing nationality and citizenship on these islands.

Are these guys Scottish?

I think there is a lot more in the mix than that.

“scottish” is an ethnic group. “the people of Scotland” are the people who live here. So Connery is a scot, but he is no longer one of the people of scotland

What about The Big Yin?....I=is he still Scottish?

I presume you just need to walk into a pub with an Englishman and an Irishman.

The rugby international qualification requirements would make Jackie Charlton cringe these days. 'Had a shite in a Scottish toilet? ideal, 'mon chase some eggs for us'.

Scotland would have been independant by now if the English had been allowed to take part in IndyRef.

Yawn, then why do you think Westminster was so keen to keep us in the Union?

I'm moving to the Highlands at the end of March. No coincidence.

I've been practicing the accent for a while now, should fit in nicely I reckon.

I'm married to a Scot but live in England. Would I get Scottish citizenship, what any the kids.

I'm not sure I'd want the associated drop in life expectancy.

You'd no longer have say you're English though - well worth a few years off your life.

Depending on where in the Highlands, an English accent may fit in more...

But you don't live in England. A vast majority of those living south of the border would gladly see Salmond & Surgeon and their acolytes float free into the North Sea. Then we could stop funding the Hibernian money pit.

Presumably not the same majority who voted for a government formed by the Conservative and Unionist Party?

Shame the money flow is actually the other way for almost all of the last 40 years. Money and electricity flows from Scotland to England.

british is not an ethnic group

Not sure about that. I think the British are probably an ethnic group including Welsh, possibly Cornish and south western Scots. Not including English, Picts, Celts of Irish or north western Scots origin, Vikings, Norman’s or othersundry hangers on, invaders and recent arrivals.
It it used colloquially to mean the United Kingdomers excluding certain folk in Northern Ireland but including certain others.

Roughly.

And frankly, who cares.

How do the same voters that you speak for feel about Wales and Northern Ireland, and thier now retired First Ministers?

For what I remember the Scottish parliament said you had to be within Scotland for 5 years.

You didn't originally say that they had to be in England.
So you would carve away parts of the UK even if the people that live in those areas didn't want to be cut loose?

You know 4 years ago when we voted, I was staunchly against Indy from a social cohesion point of view. I though we were all pulling in generally the same direction. I have effectively been left with egg on my face, as your narrow mindedness wasn't what I thought was the prevalent view.

All interesting stuff...I was a Remain but now a definite Leaver from the Union (but I also voted to remain in the EU).
Saying that though, I do wonder about the claims about the oil and gas - who will own them when we go independent? How will water territories be determined? Plenty others but if it does all go the way the very-pro-independent people claim then England will be pretty humped - which is unlikely to happen.
As to the original question - move here and by default you qualify (may require a minimum period of time though) - it is as easy as that.

Dick - My understanding is that the oil fields are already either Scottish or english - and there are international treaties describing how to carve up the continental shelf. There was a realignment of the border a few years ago which moved some bits from Scotland to England and this area will be disputed but its a very small part of it.

I'm amazed at how many Scots now live in England & vice versa. In the prison I was in there was a fair few Jockanese screws & every time we go to Scotland we seem to come across lots of Englanders whov'e moved there. They usually have pubs, shops or post offices. 'Ooh look pet, this looks like a nice local inn with a good menu for drinks & food'.........'Awwrite mayte, wot can I getcha'?
