Try not to worry too much about what other people think, unless that sort of thing bothers you, then do.
OP, you can't help the way people feel about you or things that happen to them. Their feelings are their own, and they can't be wrong about that.
Consider your children if they were younger. Yesterday a child cried because I took the sock puppet away. I know it'll be forgotten about in 5 minutes, but not reassuring her would be heartless. Your children are 20 and 26, kids stop being kids but it would be nice if parents didn't stop being parents. It's quite likely you comforted your kids when they cried about strange things like the pudding being the wrong flavour, or mum not being back from work yet, why would you not comfort them now? It's a drop in the ocean from your perspective, but they're not old enough to realise it yet.
The customer, well, what do you expect if you're in a customer facing job?
