[#10305286]

to "reply" to a comment on a post?

I'm no genius, but I don't consider myself to be a dunce either. . . .

Click"Reply"

Type a reply

Click "Submit"

Then click "edit post" to try to take out a load of stuff that shouldn't be there.

Submit again.

Page all the way down to the bottom of the thread (because you were taken to the top of the thread)

See nothing in your post has changed so repeat . . . .

Edits don't show immediately. Wait a few seconds, then refresh the page.

For some reason I never see all that extra code guff.

Try using Chrome. I get much more crud in quotes when using Edge.

The extra code guff arrives if you mistakenly include tge posters name in the copied text

For me the problem is the words as autocorrect on the phone changes what you thought you typed so you sure all your time correcting

- Attempt to click on thread

- Open different thread, as the page is still loading

- Read a bit of that thread

- Close it

- Try again to open the thread you'd originally been looking at

- Go to stage 2 above

- Repeat a few times

Not just that. Pressing return twice can do it, and whatever it changes doesn't undo with a backspace.

For me the weird autocorrect is the most annoying (although the jumping around above runs it pretty close). I think that is WordPress related as I have seen it on another WordPress site.

Ah, I wondered if the auticoautoc (yep that's autocorrect, autocorrected) was the site or my phone. Glad I'm not the only one!

I've had a couple of instances just recently where I've tapped elsewhere in the dialogue box to correct something and all the text I had painstakingly typed just disappeared.

But in answer to the OP, two. If I can't get it in two, then **** it, I'll not bother. It's only a bike forum, it's not that important.

Or copy text from just about any formatted Web page, even in chrome

One. But then I don't post from my phone.

Most of the above problems are related to the editor being used not the forum code. Both are Wordpress plug-ins. On the old forum the editor required you to click the "Preview" button to see what your post would look like. This editor attempts to be "live" so when you insert an image you see it in the text area immediately. When you copy from another page it looks like it takes all the HTML code as well as the text and can't deal with it. The old editor, I think it was the default BBCode editor, wouldn't allow HTML tags and so would strip them out.

Ah, so that is why it is so much worse here than anywhere else!

How can a website influence autocorrect though?

As far as I'm aware the site can't influence autocorrect, it's the device doing it. The only things changed (as far as I'm aware, Cougar or Drac might correct(sic) me on this) are profanities which are changed by the swear filter.

Sounds like you've installed the auto-error app!

****ed if I know but autocorrect works no different on here for me.

The delay in editing a post is a caching issue on the site, very annoying for me as I have dyslexia so I can make loads of mistakes.

Click on thread..

Click in reply box..

Post insightful and bright comments..

Click “submit”

Get “your network connection was lost” message..

Go back to thread to see no reply..

Get “login” screen

Get “we value your private parts..”

Go back to thread..

Click in reply box...

See that there has been 41 reply’s in the 5mins I’ve had to refresh page and log back in again..

Wonder if the world still turns on its axis or we’ve gone a few degrees south..

Post insightful comment that now makes no sense whatsoever to the comment I was initially going to reply too.

Submit post..

Sit back and wait for witty comments or derision..

/end

I've always wondered that but the days of websites just rendering some php and ignoring the browser are long gone unfortunately :(.

Far as I'm aware, the typing issues are down to an old version of Swiftkey.  I had it initially (and on Facebook too), upgrading Swiftkey fixed it.

The "no changes after editing" thing, as someone else already said, is because there's a caching delay of about 15 seconds.  Wait a little while, hit refresh and your edits should be visible.

Formatting errors, there's a "clear formatting" button on the menu bar.  I've found this to be hit and miss, so I launder any copying and pasting through Notepad.

Can you think of any other forums/websites where you have to do this?

Yep, I have to do this in Gmail too. In Word etc. you can Paste As > Text without Formatting, etc.

I like the way it always chooses to log me out when I submit a post, so I have to go back, copy my post, then log in, then find the thread again..

It's those little touches that made me cancel my P.

I'm on the latest Google keyboard and I get it. The difference between now and before upgrade is that before the editor was a text input now it's an iframe and built up with divs, not an input box as such. Of and why that affects autocorrect I don't know.

Generally, I rarely reply to anyone on here because the "how badly I want reply to someone versus how difficult it is" ratio fails.

Unless I see a "last post" that I'd like to reply to and I'm really quick, so my post replies to the last post by definition, then I usually leave it.

Likewise, this is the only site I use where I have to post a photo elsewhere first and then link to it on here.

Never mind. One day, possibly the day after Brexit, everything will be perfect and fine and good 🙂

Does "reply" do anything that simply going to the bottom of the thread and typing in the box doesn't?

I've done both and can't see a difference?

If you copy and paste into a quote, right click and use the "Paste as plain text" option (or Ctr + Shift + V).

Second attempt,   via notes cut and paste.  I started at 11.35pm*

this is how it goes, generally:

Open STW chat/whatever forum in safari (ipad)
Attempt to click on thread of interest
Page jumps, click on wrong thread
Press back button
Thread menu page tries to reload
Reload.
Wait for page to stop jumping
Click!or jumped! Clicked on wrong thread again, same problem
Go back to beginning
Wait too long, page hangs
Shut down tabs and safari
Reopen safari, new tab
Go to STW
Wait the correct time
Click on the right thread (it works, excitement)
Read thread,try to reply
Scroll down towards bottom/reply form
Doesn't reach bottom/reply form
Page hangs and reloads
Try again to reply, see above
Page goes blank and popup message at too of tab : there has a been a repeated problem with the page yadayada
Grit teeth
Reset ipad
Delete safari cache and all passwords
Restart Safari
Login at STW
EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEMS HAPPEN
Get lucky, type like mad
Hit 'submit'
Try to correct hasty typos by hitting 'edit'
Edit page loads, nearly, then hangs
Repeat
Repeat
Repeat
Manage to edit some typos, my guff, yet the edit window hides half of the text now because I inserted an image and that made it all go wrong
Can't scroll down to submit button, it has gone blank below
Now am logged out. Log in again

Edit some more, press 'copy' on some text.  Page now hangs.

Reload, try and re-edit

now weird double line spacing

text wasnt copied
Edit window now expired
35-45 mins expired.

Morning coffee usually cold.
Bad mood.
Mental note to use notes and paste.

*finished this post 11.55. Not bad!

This is what happens when people complain about the site, loads of people say exactly the same thing then Mark very occasionally pops up and comments on one tiny thing (autocorrect this time, we are lucky he’s here at all) while ignoring the huge issues that are making the site a complete joke to use.

So don’t expect any changes, they were there when they changed the forum, looks like they don’t care.

But wait - we have a new classifieds section!! We should be grateful yes?

Err no because it’s rubbish and no improvement on the original. And no-one uses it.

Autocorrect has nothing to do with us.

As far as I can tell it is WordPress related so it sort of is coming from your side. Is there really no way to have a simple text box entry that doesn't add all the extra formatting? Just as an option, until things are fixed

Either that's not true, or it's a remarkable coincidence that the problem has never occurred on any other site I've ever used.

I too suffer from autocorrect failures. I do most of my posting on an iPhone though, which explains the issue as the keyboard is seemingly made for people with Trump hand syndrome.

It'd be interesting to know the official traffic figures for the forum over the last year or so - items are staying on the front page far longer & fewer posts seem to be being made. It would appear the forum I far, far quieter than of past.

I suppose it begs the additional question - what other forums are current users migrating over too?

Just took me 4-5 attempts (lost count) to succesfully edit a post I made.  Luckily am literally waiting for some paint to dry.   Also when adding a link using the formatting thingummy the page keeps going blank and you have to scroll-chase the link box around to try and nail it down.  It's like a video game puzzle where the goal randomly appears and disappears.  A game that crashes every time you get it 'wrong'.

Mark,

The autocorrect issue minitnitnbe you personally but itdita aproblem with the ssw forum, typing on a phone might not be perfect every time but if I typed this on any other webpage it woukdwhwve autocorrect Rd into something legible itnb.

On any other site if I type "Its" followed by space-bar it autocautocorre to It's, on STW it just starts the word again and gives you ItsIt.

And if I click on a misspelled word (autocorrect in the paragraph above) and click the correct spelling on the Android keyboard it tries to insert the correct word in the middle of it.

I looks like the sites autocorrect is fighting with either the Android keyboard or something in chrome. There's seemingly 3 autocorrectsaut (yes that is what it typed after I typed autocorrects and didnt go back an manually edit it), one in android keyboard one pops up in the text with a list of options and an actuall autocorrect that automatically ****s it up.

toecorrect also seems to add return lines before the next paragraph, I found that last one about 10 lines down the page after partially correcting the above. Its also taken the first two letters of this paragraph too.

It might be everyones phone doing it not yours, but no other site makes typing this hard!

And you still value my privacy, once when loading this page, once after logging in, once whilst viewing my reply and again whilst editing to add this. And probably again when I hit submit.

Can't we just have the old forum back, i can't even remember what it was that meant it was so bad it needed a change!

Yes, there's some nonsense about the gender of dogs that seems to have been there forever. Can't wait for that to be gone.
