How long does it take for page to load when posting?

[#12679407]

Asking more out of curiosity than anything else, but the forum seems pretty quick these days apart from when you post or edit a message. When you hit the Submit button it seems to go into a freefall of nothing visible happening and then about 20 seconds after hitting Submit, the page reloads and your message is there.

Chrome on an Android device and a MacBook...I'm sure something is happening in the background but just curious to know what it takes so long when everything else seems to load very quickly.

Is it just me that is experiencing this or is it happening to everyone? As said, it is a curiosity rather than trying to report a bug as it does work, just incredibly slowly...

Seemingly forever.
To the point where STWers have been saved from many of my posts because of that prospect of waiting. It may not be all bad?

Yes, lately it's been taking a couple of Ice Ages from hitting submit to anything appearing.

Not just me then. Feels like forever. Does make you consider if it's worth commenting (which may not be a bad thing).

I try not to be critical of the site, as I know it's run on a shoe string - but it, by a massive margin, the worst site on the internet for responsiveness / stability (that I know of).

Does make you consider if it’s worth commenting

Has it ever made a difference in the past?

This site hasn't worked properly for maybe 10+ years?

Let's see...

*EDIT* - 18 seconds

*EDIT* - 3 seconds

*EDIT* - 3 seconds again, so maybe it's something to do with the first time you post on a particular thread.

Around 30s. Interesting though that just loading a page without posting is nearly instant.

ETA- 26.39

It didn’t used to be like this with the delay - it’s a new thing I reckon. Been a month or 2 perhaps?

Yeah, a recent thing for me anyway...maybe 4 weeks-ish. However, sounds like not just me which is good news for me - I thought this place was going the way of my family with me!

Thanks @Mark - this wasn't intended as a bug report thing, more just seeing if it was just me that was experiencing this delay. However, if it turns up something that can be improved then all good.

Subsequent edits seem fine, it's only the initial post that takes forever

Edit: checks, yep, seems much faster on the edit

Yup as someone who multiple edits I find the more you edit the quicker it responds.

A preview button would be useful. I always found it was when there was one. Also sometimes a preview could give you a better idea how your point comes across before you post. You can't really make major changes to your post after hitting submit if you feel there was a better way of saying something.

I noticed it a few weeks ago. It doesn't seem to be an issue getting the post to the server though as I have occasionally opened a new tab straight after sending a post and it's viewable on that instantly, the tab I've posted from though can take up to a minute to load!

It regularly times out completely for me when I try and refresh or go to the main forum page - maybe one in three attempts, Firefox just gives up and says page unresponsive...

Your username is very close to a well-known car product, I suppose. Perhaps it thinks you're interested in flame-haired former girlfriends as well?

EDIT: Also 21 secs

I had put it down to my aged MacBook dragging it's arse so I'm quite pleased to find it isn't.

Yeah, still very slow for me - posting replies, editing posts or posting new posts...

I wouldn't say I'm used to it, but nothing seems to be able to be done to fix it, so you have to bear with it.

if you post, pressing the submit button and then even 1s later press the forum button/link, your post still appears but after 1s rather than waiting 20+s

That's good to know. There are times when waiting 20 seconds to admire with smug satisfaction my carefully crafted work of art seems like an eternity.

It's reassuring to learn that I can reduce it to just 1 second if the tension proves too great 😏

I’ve noticed it being a bit slow recently on Firefox. I always used to use Brave, but when the Preferences box at the bottom pops up, it locks the whole page. I can check the box, but nothing happens. Which is fine, I’ve got other browsers, but Brave used to be very reliable. 🤷🏼

Way too long. I've got into the habit of copying the post before pressing submit because one or two have disappeared. I also had a 502 error (I think) reposted and ended up with two posts

I find that if I hit submit and then start humming (and beeping) the dialup tone so familiar from my 1996 AOL account the 30 seconds just slips by.

I've paid for a special 'First Class' members rate so that my posts only take 10 seconds. It means other forum members have to sign to day they've received it though and if any members aren't logged in when I post on a thread they have to go and collect if from the sorting office.

EDIT - oddly - that post did only take about 10 seconds. Cosmic Ordering.
