As above really , I have a Garmin Edge 605 that has mapping facility and I want to put a route onto it that is on a website . Can anybody explain to me in laymans terms how to do it .

Assuming it's like the edge 2/5/8 series, just convert the file into tcx format if it's not already (if you do t know how to do this just google gpsies converter and there's a dead easy online tool to do it.
Drop the tcx file into the new files folder on the garmin and you're done. when you next turn the garmin on it will do the required and add the file as a course.
It won't add the map though so if you've got mapping facility but no maps might need to look at that too.
I create them in Garmin Connect and the upload them to my Edge 500
