I don't think techno and rave qualifies as house.

Oh god, this old chestnut!

I hate to use wikipedia, but here I go... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Styles_of_house_music

Thing is though, there are so many genres and sub-genres and crossovers and ting, that it's hard to know where one genre ends and another begins.

Yeah, and I hate that too... It's always driven by people trying to be different and invent the "next best thing", but thankfully, no matter the genre, it all comes under the one all encompassing banner... "House Music"

Personally, I never subscribed to the stupidity of limiting myself to one particular sound, and just went with what I thought sounded good. The beauty of being in London in the late 80s/early 90s meant that we could go to enjoy different sounds every single night (had we wanted to/could afford to/had the stamina for).

Kudos; the kind of stuff you seem to be into; well, ime clubs that played such stuff were frequented by people trying desperately to look cool, and would rarely dance for fear of getting their designer clothers grubby or sweaty...

Such lightweight stuff might be played around 10/11pm, when the clubs opened, but by the time everyone got warmed up, it had made way for some proper dance music.

Here all you're describing is the London Phenomenon. You ever done much clubbing outside of London Elf? I've done quite a bit in London, and lots round the rest of the country, and plenty in Europe. I can say with total honesty that every night I've ever been out in London is only memorable for the amount of pretentious tossers around, the "I'm too cool to dance" crowd and the "the drugs ain't what they used to be" crowd. London is a shit place for a night out unless you're in with a crowd already, they don't like outsiders.

Seems to be fairly common now. Either you get the kids who are arguing over whether it is dubstep complextro fidgit nurave tech house bollox or some music snobs who think that the only house worth listening to was back in the late 80's/early 90's and you had to be at the warehouse parties and m25 raves or you can't appreciate house.

If it sounds good that is the main thing, who cares which genre it comes under!

BINGO! And that's why I love "House Music"... I try to stay away from using any of its sub genres when talking about it as it infuriates me that we have to, but that's kinda the problem caused by people pushing the scene in new directions which I suppose is no bad thing overall.

How old are you (again...)?

You go on about age like you're older than everyone else on here! You're still in your 30's chap, same decade as me (and probably most of the others on this thread)! ๐Ÿ˜‰

the clubs I went to no-one gave a toss about looking cool, it was all about the music and having fun.

Spot on, likewise here... If I ever went anywhere that was full of people too bothered about looking cool, I'd just not go back.

You come on here moan about other peoples tastes and then waffle on about how cool you were back in 88 and post up some old house tunes that sound shite today.

If Elf was going to clubs in 88, he was a good few years underage! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I've been (don't want to say clubbing) clubbing since 1995 and have danced around all sorts of places over the years and I can firmly say that music, clubs, production values have never been as good as they are now.

YES YES YES, THIS is the attitude. Good man!

Yes I have actually. Your point? ๐Ÿ˜

I can say with total honesty that every night I've ever been out in London is only memorable for the amount of pretentious tossers around

That's a fair comment, and more than true if you go to places like MoS, Fabrik etc. Although there's loads of 'normal' music loving types there too. But venture to some of the grimier areas, and you'll find loads of great little clubs playing all sorts of great music. We used to go to the 333 Club which is on Old St; fair mix of Hoxton ****s and ordinary folk of all colours shapes and sizes. They used to play some of the most evil DnB you can imagine in the basement. Always guaranteed a good night out there. One great aspect of London clubs is that you'll get loads of tourists too so always loads of interesting fun people to meet. I can't imagine you'd get quite such a mix at the Kursal Southend...

The pretentiousness of people in places playing soft House music was just something I observed. Always felt it was a bit of a poseurs 'scene' really. Sorry, but I just find that kind of music insipid and uninspiring. The best dancers were always to be found in't techno and DnB clubs....

One of me fave club nights was Megatripolis at Heaven. Jeeze that was insane. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Then there was Reclaim The Streets. Heavy duty Techno, and the added bonus of a pagga with Babylon. ๐Ÿ™‚ Oh happy, halcyon days...

Sub Focus! Kudos, Kudos! ๐Ÿ˜€

Are you sitting comfortably?

(Turns stereo up loud. Has a boogie. Is exhausted within a minute...)

See? I knew we'd have common ground somewhere.

(Is Angelos involved in that?)

I'm suprised this thread got this long without somebody mentioning Tony De Vit (unless I've missed it somewhere). Some of the 'younger folk' could do with listening to some of his stuff I reckon.

Plenty more stuff for me to listen to.

I wasn't looking for techno or rave - looking for that more mellow edge - not the wumpa wumpa music, not the obvious stuff but that mellowere edgee where house meets disco.

So - what is house music?
