what temperature do you set the thermostat to on the hot water tank ? I have it set to 60'c which seems to be about right. My housemate reckons ours always used to be set to 45'C - I find this hard to believe but never used to check it until I noticed a decrease in the amount of hot water, and the landlord reckons it should be at 65'c which I reckon is a bit much...

what's the norm ?

IIRC you need it at or above 60deg to gaurantee it stays bug free.

The temperature should be above 65deg for at least 2 hours (I think) per week. Any lower and there is a risk of Legionella in the water tank.

For heat pump systems I've fitted, a 7 day programmable timer on the IH boost the temp once a week to achieve this. The thermostat is set to 50deg for everday usage for the hot water provided by a heat pump.

55 for bug protection, however 60 is about correct to err on side of safety.
