[#9983187]

I tried digging out my Horny trainset that had been sitting in a box for the best part of 12 or 14 years. I have three trains and a load of track and extras, was all in good working order when I boxed it up. I put an oval track together yesterday to test it out but the train isn't moving at all. Any advice? Is there a checklist of things I can do? None of my three trains are running on it. Guessing it's an issue with the track? Don't want to have to end up buying everything new again. The wires look good. I got a bit of a spark off one of my trains, but no movement.

Edit; main reason behind getting it going is to show me three year old nephew who is obsessed with trains at the moment. Although there is a few steam engine trains that I really like the look of to possibly get in the future too.

I know I've probably lost lots of cool points with this post 😉 .

Photos of other people's trainsets welcome!! 🙂

Check if there is power to the rails, eg put a screwdriver across them and look for a spark,  try turning loco upside down and gently turning wheels, sometimes the motor seizes up and sticks a bit, finally have you checked all connections, live and neutral, the fuse etc.

google local model shops or small railway societies and ask them can they test the locos.

AL the first bits i used to do.

also try genty wire brushing both the track and train wheels, as they may have a coating of grease/rust etc on them stopping the pick up of electrickery

“coating of grease/rust etc”

Well, if there’s rust involved often lube eases any resistance

Once you’ve crawled back out of your hole go get some peco electrolube and put it on the wheel pickups (copper contacts that run against inside edge of wheels). Then get a track rubber and polish the rails till they shine.

hornby ringfield motors really like to be warmed up. Whack em on the track and make them run at full pelt for a few minutes. They’ll run much better at slow speeds after this, though you’ll probably have to re-clean the track and the wheels afterwards.

That’s the one. Except it’s Hornby. The railway modeller equivalent of British Leyland. It’ll probably catch fire.

All three locos not running?

if you’re near Bradford, try Frizinghall Models & Railways, strangely now in Baildon, not Frizinghall

if near Liverpool, try Hattons. If near Sheffield, Rails Of Sheffield

Have you got a multimeter to check the track?

Get a cloth and give the track a good rub (nothing abrasive), with something like meths or IPA if you have it. Give the loco wheels a quick rub with a cotton bud soaked likewise too - avoiding any painted bits, IPA will strip the paint.

You should probably check it's not a problem with your wife signal

Track rub down with a track cleaner is a good call so is the multimeter voltage check.

Also check track joints.

If you have shorted across the tracks the PSU needs unplugging for a couple of minutes to reset.

Hattons still has a shop I’m pretty sure, but yes, in Widnes.

You don’t really need (or probably even want) the CRC of the model railway world though, if you have one just pop into your local model shop.

It's certainly getting up a head of steam.

Although I think some posters are deliberately missing the points.

It's difficult to gauge the response to threads like this.

This one certainly gained some traction though.......
