I've finally decided it's probably time to invest in some proper network storage at home. Current set up is an old desktop with a second hard drive it linked to the router. Works but there's zero backup and we have to makesure the PC is on.
What I would like is some sort of NAS we can leave permenantly on that also backup automatically. Don't neds masses of storage, mainly photos and music although I can see more video being created now we've got a GoPro, 1 Tb should be more than enough. I know a lot of the NAS boxes take two drives but sometimes bothe drives fry if the unit fails. I'm not too worried about the house burning down type backup, more the common hard drive failure.
Is a drive with cloud storage the way to go?
I went that way, fwiw... A readynas duo for home 'backing up' and serving / sharing music and movies without my computer being on, and www.crashplan.com as my cloud backup service. Kinda think I should have used www.backblaze.com now, but that can be for next year!
Interested in this. I've just bought a second drive for my NAS, thinking that I would mirror the first drive in case of failure. Is this not correct?
From the limited knowledge I've got the second drive is useful if you need uniterrupted running, i.e. the first drive fails (also acts as a backup if the first drive fails. But I've also heard it's quite possible for both drives to get corrupted at the same time, not sure how often this happens though.
