Hiring a car in Tenerife

I've booked a hire car from Tenerife South Airport in a few weeks.
I've signed up to their insurance (despite what you read it was only a few quid more than doing it on my own and leaving a credit card deposit so worth it in my book for less faff).

Apart from this is there anything else that I need - most information I can find online is about driving your own car in Europe.

Who have you hired with? Goldcar are the parasites of the hire car world so I hope it’s not them.

Even if it’s not, read everything before you sign it, don’t give them your credit card unless you know 100% what they are doing with it and take photos of everything on the car no matter how small.

Hope you’ve looked at Autoreisen, always a good deal with them. Make sure you take your licence and not a bad idea to download and print your driving details, www.checkmy licence.gov.uk

Driving in the Canaries is easy, just stick to the limits. Have a great time.

I enjoyed hiring from Goldcar. Every panel being battered already takes away any potential stress 😉

check that your flights in and out are the same airport - we got caught out by that although the hire company were completley fine with us dropping it back at the "wrong" airport

Cicar are excellent - ‘local’ Canary Islands company and have always had really good service and prices generally cheapest as well.

+1 for Cicar/Cabrera Medina (who are the same company). Have hired with them x2 and both times it’s been great.

Cicar again. Easy and cheap when I went there last year.

Be wary of a final "local tax" or some such nonsense. I hired a car in La Gomera for a week and when I got home there was an email with this additional charge for ~€90. Went back and sent them a screenshot of the hire terms that specially said the price I paid at original point of purchase was final and included all local taxes.

Cheers for the replies. WE went with SurCar - pick up appears to be in the car park so we definitely could be up for some dodgy dealings. All part of the fun I suppose

Oh yes - don’t pay their excess waiver, get third party (MSE has recommendations) as it’s cheaper.

As @ratherbeintogabo says are you *sure* their insurance is within a hassles-worth of one from elsewhere?

It's the excess insurance where the fun begins - choices are normally enormous excess, massive fee from the hirer to get rid of that risk, or peanuts online.

We did hertz (lanzagrotty) a few weeks ago. All very painless. Was via tui but cost seemed ok. Had a lot of docs in pdf form that "needed" printing out.

Comically low traffic levels.
