[#9838875]

Went for a cut this morning and realised what was once a side part is now a comb over.

So a change to a #3 on the sides blended to a #1 on top seems to have sorted that problem. All I need now is some electric clippers for maintenance.

What is the STW go to device?

Wahl mains here, at least ten years old still going strong, also have a cordless version that cost less than £30, very inpressed with quality.

My missus is a hairdresser ..she uses Wahl clippers..and has done for years ..she has a cordless rechargeable set ..but you don't need to go to that level of expense if it's just for you ..

We differ slightly ..same grades but the other way around ...

I have a centre parting.

It's about 6 inches wide.

A sub £30 quid set of wahl, etc, is fine for 1 -3 length.  If you're going to go shorter in future however they become lacking quite quickly.

My first buzzcut was with a pair of cheapish clippers.  They were OK on the zero setting, but didn't get that close in reality.

Did a bit of research and ended up going down the Oster route.  I picked the 616 instead of the monster 76 because the size, weight, power and noise just wasn't necessary.  Very pleased with my purchase and I can see myself having them for a long long time.

The one below comes with a 0000 and 1 blade.  You can get a 00000 but the difference is in reality a few hours growth....

Oster 616 on Amazon

I keep the standard clippers for doing my beard as it leaves a good stubble length.  This should give you an idea that a 0 isn't exactly 0mm.

Couple of other good tips I've picked up are to use after sun (I use boots standard stuff) as it's a lot thinner and less greasy than standard moisturiser so is less shiny and also to buy a small bottle of sewing machine oil instead of clipper oil - it's the same stuff just a lot cheaper and less fiddly than the little tubes.

However, for what you're going for I'd just keep going with what you've got.

edit: Just realised you're looking for that first pair of clippers.  I got the ones below and was very please with them for everything above a zero.  Especially at the price.  Silly really.

I bought a set last week to replace a Wahl (battery had died) and something else (battery had died).  My requirements were simple: rechargeable (not bloody NiCad) and a ceramic blade.  I ended up getting this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B071X89732

Twenty quid and came with a spare battery.  It's a little plasticy and the instructions leave a lot to be desired, but apart from that it seems absolutely fine from the once that I've used it.

EDIT: it goes down to 0.8mm.

I don’t use clippers anymore, I just use my merkur safety razor.

Takes it all off no dramas at all, just need to make sure you use a decent shaving soap and get a good lather going.

All good.

Cordless for me, get into shower enclosure, wallop hair down to no guard level, beard down to a 1, then shower it all off me, Once a week.

Think mine is a braun?, canny remember, but going great for about 5 years now.

I've owned several pairs of clippers over the years and regret every straying from Wahl. They're just the best. I don't think they have the best battery tech if you want cordless, but other than that...

Hi Teeto

The safety razor route looks like the next step for me.

How do you find/manage doing the back of the head?  Is it a "feel" or a mirror thing?  Any cuts or nicks, and what was your learning curve, so to speak?

I hope you wrote that the wrong way round and you actually have a #1 on the sides and a #3 on top.

Still got a thick head of hair - but I use some Remmington clippers on 18mm and 12mm and just sheep sheer my head. Can't be bothered with the queue at the barbers and the cost.

What you need is a set of these

http://www.argos.co.uk/product/1928851

The dropper post of hair clippers, in that you'll wonder how you used to manage without them, and why has everyone been just using the other crap sort.

Normal clippers are designed for other people to use while cutting your hair. These are specifically designed to do your own. Just rorm it around your head... job jobbed. None of this nonsense of trying to contort your arm around the back of your head then getting your missus to check if you've missed anywhere. Or cables that you have to plug in and get tangled up in. Sod that!

They're absolutely bloody brilliant!!

Whatever clippers you end up getting, immediately chuck all the guards in the bin, and feel the liberation of a zero all over. Its the only way to go 🙂

Can anyone recommend a decent beard trimmers?
I've got a £20 Remington one and it's a bit crap after 3 years. Barber says that I have quite thick and curly(when long) beard stubble, so these basic clippers struggle for oomph.

All done by feel, and then asking the Mrs... As for cuts etc, I use Arko shaving creme, and this is ace.. it lathers up really well, and cuts are few and far between..

I bought some cordless ones from TK Maxx about 3 years ago, been absolutely fine. I usually cut my hair about once a month, 3 on top, 0.5/1 at the back and sides.

I've got really thick hair, no bald spots so get it right up ye ya baldy bastards 🙂

The OP after his haircut 🙂

I have used Wahl in the past but my hair(that's still growing) must be like wire as I wore 3 sets out over 15 years . My brother in law bought me a set of cordless Phillips clippers for a birthday pressie 4 years ago and they're still good to go. The head rotates to comfy angles and cuts well , I can't comment on the clips for altering the length of cut as I've never used them. Currently £35 on Amazon.

Beard trimmers are just hair clippers in prettier colours with accessories you don't need and rubbish batteries.

Gillette Mach 3 in the shower for my heid

Phillips cordless trimmer for my winter beard #unclealbert

Philips Series 5000 Hair Clipper with Titanium Blades including Beard and Hair Combs - HC5450/83 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00GGKCW7C/

I did use corded whals set, but cordless is easier.

only a month of winter beard to go and it'll be back to Mach 3 all over.

Just think all that hair down the plughole mating with the huge fatballs from the takeaway places then blocking up the sewers

Stop being so tight spend £9 a month maybe a tenner including a wee tip and keep our barbers in work

All well and good redmex , but with only one wage coming into the house and two young kids I think I'll stick with spending <£30 every 5-6 years thank you. 😉
