[#12899735]

I'd seen it advertised that he was doing a programme on Columbia, but having just read the review of it, it sounds absolutely off-the-chart bonkers, even by his standards 😳

Its on tomorrow night. Looks 'interesting' to say the least!
Our Guy in Colombia: cocaine, guns, waterboarding – how on earth did this wild documentary get made?

There’s no way you can watch Our Guy in Colombia and not be permanently changed by it. There are the scenes of kidnap and torture, obviously (the narrator solemnly intones over footage of Martin being slapped and yelled at in the back of a car while giggling: “The official advice is not to antagonise your kidnappers”), and ones of him being shot at close range to test the effectiveness of a bulletproof coat. He gets waterboarded for a while before he taps out, and we see the shocked footage of him, speechless, afterwards. There’s a scene where he mashes leaves and makes a kilogram block of cocaine while armed police watch on to make sure he doesn’t steal any of it. There’s footage of him downhill racing on a bike with no brakes, and a wonderful scene of him explaining the country’s history with guerrilla warfare while jacked up on coca tea. All you can think while watching is: how on earth did this ever get commissioned, let alone insured?

He keeps comparing Bogotá to Grimsby

Slight difference between Codhead & cokehead, but yeah.

I used to work with a bloke from Colombia; he often found it difficult getting through customs, because he shared his name with one of the major cartel leaders!

Would we even notice ? 😉😂

I was thinking that…

Thanks for the tip, set up to record on my Sky box.

I used to work with a bloke from Colombia. He came to work in England after he was kidnapped and his family spent their life savings rescuing him. He was missing both of his little fingers.

Sounded like quite a lively place to live.

Probably not.. coca tea doesn't really have that sort of effect on you. Unless you mean calm him down like many a cup of herbal tea.. 🤣

Guy Martin should try feeding wild hippos with hands or swim with salt water crocodiles.

"Can I get a brew, lass, eh, eh?"

"Try this cheeky little local infusion before you do a piece to camera, it's a stimulant unfortunately..."

You couldn’t really fly into a landing strip in the middle of the Columbian jungle in anything else though really, could you? 😂

Why wasn't it blaring "jumping jack flash" when coming in to land?

The fact that making cocaine comes after the mention of him being shot makes me assume he survives the shooting and for that reason I'm out.

I like Guy Martin, but didn't enjoy that. Thought he came across as cocky and arrogant.

Is this about a decade too late. I mean aren't the Colombians trying to change the image of their country around the world? This is hardly helping. Felt a bit like exploitation to me.

No cars allowed in the centre of Bogotá at weekends. Sounds like a forward thinking civilised place.

Wouldn't it be lovely if London could do this.

GM makes the point at the start of the first episode that they've elected a progressive government and are trying to build a 21stC nation - I hope episode 2 (and 3?) focuses on this a bit more

If the US admitted to itself that the war on drugs is unwinnable then that would give the Columbian govt the tools to get a grip on the production and root out the criminal element....

And yes major cities across the UK could do the same if it had the cojones

After seeing the process of how they make the stuff and the narrator going on about the price of it, I been wondering how I can get me some. Looks like a bargain!

he's always like that though, to some extent? In his telly stuff & certainly in his books. Although I'd probably describe it as "neurodivergent matter-of-factness" 😃

Anyway, I enjoyed it! Although only watched the first one so far.

My wife innocently brought me back a box of coca tea when she went to do a project in Peru some years ago. She had no idea what it was or what the consequences could have been had customs found it in her suitcase on her return to the UK.

I loved the way he had a finger covered with white powder then wipes it off on his jeans.

Hope he doesn't wear them coming back through the airport, the dogs will just love him!

Have to say they appear to have made a little more effort with this latest series although the hero worship of Guy is still a bit painful

I like it how they dropped in ‘amateur explorer’ 😂 so he goes on holiday
