I don't hate Blair. Not like I hated Thatcher. At least you knew what you were getting there. I just view him with the utter contempt he so richly deserves. I'm not sure that many people feel the same loathing towards Ian Duncan Smith and Michael Howard as they do towards Blair.
Had Blair been an electoral liability he would not have remained leader for so long. It's not a case of he was hated but the opposition leaders were considered worse.

The process of a negotiated peace agreement with the PIRA was started by John Major. Tony Blair did not have any choice politically other than to carry on with the NI peace talks.
It took considerable courage for John Major to instigate talks with the PIRA, the political consequences if it all went pear-shaped were absolutely enormous, specially given both huge public hostility towards the PIRA and decades of British government anti-IRA propaganda.
It took no courage on the part of Tony Blair to continue with the already well established NI peace talks when he became PM. In fact abandoning the peace talks would have been political suicide for Blair as by then they were providing a glimmer of hope in a stalemate situation, as it became obvious that not only could the PIRA not be defeated militarily but that the PIRA was actually prepared to genuinely talk about a lasting peace in NI.
It's John Major who deserves the credit for the NI peace process, not Tony Blair, although he rarely gets it.
I was at a business event just before Tony won his first election and he had turned up to seek the support of the small business community (he did a lot of this to steal traditional Tory votes) the people in the room were initially anti Blair but within 15 minutes he had well and truly won them over, now I am probably a socialist at heart but firmly believe in balancing it with good capatilism (if such a thing exists) so Blair should have won me over very easily but I had an instant almost unreasonable dislike of the man (I thought he was unhinged) yet I could not at that point explain why? I think he is the most publicly accepted sociopath in recent times. Nothing he does or accepts will ever surprise me, he has amassed a personal wealth from some very questionable sources and no one seems to mind?

You were vindicated by the fact that Blair turned out to be a full on Catholic loony who thought that God had sent him on a mission to invade Iraq and topple Saddam.

+1 he also took considerable political risk , including opposition from high ranking Tory cabinet ministers, to put his personal political neck on the block in pursuit of peace.
Whilst very pleased to see John Major's undoubted influence so warmly acknowledged, I don't think Blair inherited a flat wicket and it took considerable political ability, albeit with less risk, to close it out. Blair's relationship with Clinton was incredibly important.
I am no fan of Blair, but I think it is a tad churlish not to recognise that he was a man of uncommon political ability, who is not without achievements.

OK 'hate' might be too strong a word to associate with a man of the cloth, but Desmond Tutu certainly shares very simular views on Tony Blair to me, ie, that he is a war criminal who should be put on trial. He certainly isn't "indifferent".
I'm quite happy to be considered a freak or weirdo if the alternative is having to be indifferent to Blair (or his wife).
