I'm a bit out of the loop, and have a comprehensive selection of movies to choose from for tonight's viewing... what have people seen recently that's good - I like most genres from arty indie stuff to thrillers / "tense-making" as my wife would put it... not so keen on explosive-laden blockbusters. Thoughts?
Fury is excellent as is Kingsman, both into my top 10.

Interesting, Fury, Kingsman and Foxcatcher are already ones I was considering... I've seen Wild, very good.

ok, good suggestions all - ta, some of the above I've seen, some I've haven't. I'll report back... (anyone seen Unfriended - I've heard mixed stuff about it?)
Imitation game and kingsmen are both films I've seen recently that I've been very pleased with. Not as recent, but I also enjoyed gravity.
These are strong recommendations as I've found cinema to be rather tedious of late.

Was only mildly amused by Kingsmen, I'm afraid. Imho, etc.
However, watching thread with interest as I've got a fair amount of travel coming up. Just about the only place I watch films these days is on a plane!
The latest Mission: Impossible is ACE! Good old fashioned full-on action from start to finish. Cheesy but I had a goofy grin on my face from start to finish and usually I get bored easily with modern "blockbuster" cinema. As good if not better than the original Cruise outing and Rebecca Ferguson is lovely.
If you want a thriller you could do a lot worse than The Gift.

Was very impressed with McLeans (he of the beta band) first flick. Good score as well.
I found MI5 OK. Not remarkable in any way.

Yeah I wasn't overwhelmed by Kingsman myself.
Ex Machina - thought it was okay until the improbable/unfeasible thing that happens near the end.

Definitely one of the better super-hero films. Up there with Guardians of the Galaxy.
ok, so I went for Kingsman - definitely enjoyable, cleverly done although typically for Matthew Vaughan a bit OTT, a lot of style over substance and not quite as clever as it thinks it is... Still, worth a watch. 3/5.

Not that recent but Predestination is superb.
I wasn't impressed with Mad Max, but I did like Paddington.
I would recommend 'pixels' though.

Yep Ant man was good. So is Grand Budapest hotel. I quite like What we do in the shadows. Didn't think much of Run all night or the gunman.
I may be in with the sleeping bairns again tonight, so another film night could be on the cards - decisions decisions!

Yep, Fury is rubbish. Cliched in every respect, poorly scripted, poorly cast. Even the CGI is bad. (Think, original 70s Star Wars effects..) There are so many better war films..
Ok, so tonight I went for Ex Machina - I thought it was excellent, not what I was expecting at all and very well done. Echoes of Moon and The Skin I Live In. Very good, recommended IMO. 4/5.
Imitation Game - excellent
Ok, another one to add - just watched Unfriended on the train, pretty good - a lot more graphic and slasher style than I expected or realised, clever set up and a bit Blair Witchy in its novel setting / presentation. , All in all a clever twist on that type of film... Good stuff, 3.5/5.
I'm no film buff and will only too happily go a couple of years or more without sitting in front of the box, but I've had a few recommendations recently that I enjoyed..
Grand Budapest hotel is an obvious one, but for a better movie on the same theme try The Darjeeling Ltd..
The intouchables is great..
Anything with Danny McBride is good for genuine lols..

I was not expecting it to be that good at all, trying to sell it to mrs PF as I read the description wasn't easy.
The final scene has to be one of my favourites in a long time.
Definitely recommended.

Best film I seen recently that is instantly memorable & looks like nothing you seen before is Snowpiercer. It's hard to track down but if you are a sci fi fan then it's a must IMHO

Very ,very good ,and not what I was expecting.
Chappie is excellent. Shades of the original RoboCop and the original Mad Max with good acting and a thoughtful ploy.
