[#7425090]

A friend is trading in their GTI and have been offered £3500 trade in, so that's what it'll cost us.
It's a 56 plate 2 litre petrol auto dsg. FSH.
One of the faults I've noticed with car is a hole in side support of drivers seat and some of the foam has dropped. Can this be fixed easily/cheaply?

I've never really been into cars, buying old cars and move them on after a while. Normally spend up to £2k so for us it's quite a lot to spend and on a 9 yr old car.
BUT
It goes like shit off a shovel, Jesus I loved driving it 🙂
Waiting for insurance quote and that might decide on the cars outcome!

Anyone got one of these?

Awesome car, look great, nice and fast and they hold their value. You can also fit 2 of them bicycle things in the back with the seats down as well.

Brilliant cars to drive and if you look after the bodywork (find a local car detailers) and mechanicals (find a recommended local VW independent garage) you'll only lose a couple of hundred £ in yearly depreciation.

To replace the bolster and seat cloth will cost approx £140 from MJ Interiors (highly recommended).

Is there not some issues with the DSG gearbox on that version? Might be worth googling.

Nice car. I had a 56 plate five door. Watch for oil consumption, handbook gives 600 miles between top ups. Some seem to be better than others. Front light lenses started to go foggy. DSG issues are, I believe, down to a software updates and requiring regular 2-year fluid changes.

It's a 5 door. Can't get a price from our insurance until Monday, chuffing GA online shite.... 👿
Trying to work out if it's a good price considering the seat situation and the nsr door has 3 or 4 small dents.
Will have a look at ones sold on ebay

EDIT

Yeah headlights are fogging, cracked fog light too, no dramas with that though.
It has been looked after at the local VW dealers so hopefully everything is up to date.

We love ours. It's getting replaced by a co car next month which will be a shame

Quick, grown up enough, can do economy if it has to.

Good to see the prices are still reasonably good for them (I think we paid £7k three years ago) for our 06 plate

Do it, I took delivery of a new mk7 gti dsg four weeks ago and haven't been able to wipe the smile off my face. In two minds about having it remapped to 300 bhp. The current 220 makes it pretty rapid.

Dsg box is a joy to drive.

OP you've correctly answered your own question there. If you've never had one nows the time. I've not had any of the more recent models but had a Mk1, 2, 3 and 4 before the (now ex) wife insisted we get a different car. I'm considering getting another as they are such good all rounders - well made, can be a sensible car or a lot of fun depending on your right foot. IME dealers will bid up on trade in as they know the cars are easy to smarten up if necessary and will sell well.

Yes think he said mpg can go from 30ish if careful down to mid 20s if not.... 🙂
soma, have you used mj interiors?

Agree with comments, get one now while we can as it's fun. I have a feeling that if we do the running costs might make us have a rethink down the line but at least we'd have had a good few months!!

Yeah but he enjoyed driving it and that's what counts!

He can always sell it later.

Enjoy O.P.

Thought I'd get a quote from the VW garage for new seat cover & fitting........£565 😯 LOL

So it's looking for repair options. Any more recommendations?

Is that a sign of lots of short journeys, interstellar miles or crap seats?

I've similar seat damage on my T5 and understand it's quite common with shorter more substantial owners 'rolling out' of the seat. Overly expensive repair for what it is but the quote above seems about right.
Go for it, it's only money. Regret what you don't do, not what you do!

If you can get the cover still as a spare - it's pretty easy to DIY

eBay isn't helping much, but get a quote for the cloth cover from VW

Yeah I might call them back for a supply price only.
Yes leather seats would be nice but it is what it is, cloth seats wouldn't prevent me buying a car I liked, ideally not ripped tho!

Mechanicals more important than the seat.

I have a 5 dr mk5 dsg GTI.

By far the best car I have owned. Remapped to 245bhp and 290 lbs torque by Rtech . Do it you will not regret it.

I used to have a 3dr manual. Superb car. Get one.

Averaged 29 mpg over 30,000 miles, and that was driving pretty much everywhere like my tail was on fire because that's how they make you drive when you're young and foolish.

Also, I much prefer the cloth in the GTI over the leather. The tartan is a nod back to the original MK1 GTI and I like that. As mentioned up there, MJ Interiors have a very very good reputation, some of their custom work is outstanding.

'Jim the Trim' - http://autotrimltd.co.uk - in Denton, east side of Manchester. Brilliant, old school service. Replaced the sagging headliner in my Mk2 GTi - when I dropped it off with them they had two E Type Jags sat there waiting to be re-upholsterered. Perfect job at a reasonable price and they washed and waxed the car for me too. Recommended.

You also need to know about some of the issues which the TFSI engines have, these issues are not just limited to VW but across the entire range of VAG cars

All TFSI engines sound a little diesel like at idol but if you can hear any chain slap coming from the engine then the cam chain and tensioner are on their way out (don't mistake this for the timing belt) this generally happens due to the oil pick up pipe which can become blocked. So you have a few things to check (over and above the service history) things like has the oil pick up pipe been changed? has the cam chain been changed? And has the Cam follower been changed? If not then you may well need to look into getting them changed as if any one of them go then it will be huge repair bills. Also due to the nature of the TFSI's design then engines are prone to carbon build up especially around the inlet valves, if it gets too bad then the car will be down on power and not very nice to drive, the best way to sort it is to take off the inlet manifold and clean all the inlets by hand.

Also if the car is on a long life service plan then there is more chance of the above issues, I know an Audi master tec who says that the TFSI engines should not do more than 5-6 thousand miles without an oil and filter change.

I also have a mk5 dsg which has been remapped by noble motorsport to 260bhp and 280lbs ft. It's pretty quick and surprisingly thirsty. £3500 seems an amazing price. They are built like tanks though and will last for decades. No rattles on mine whatsoever (2008). They do like to drink oil though. Still looks great and turns heads. Black heated leather and sat nav in mine. I'll probably keep it for another 5 or 6 years as the wife will lease her next car.

Ignore the bloke telling you to get a Mk1. They're nice cars, but I wouldn't want to try and use one as a daily.

1) That's a great price for a MK5 GTI. I'd snap his hand off because you'll be able to make a profit if you don't like it and can be bothered doing a private sale.
2) The seat can be fixed. MJ Interiors have a good reputation and trim a lot of Golf show cars. Equally there will be uphosterers locally who redo seat bolsters every day of the week for local car dealers.
3) Golf GTIs don't really seem to be depreciating.
4) I wouldn't worry too much about the economy. Unless you do seriously big miles the difference between 30mpg and 45mpg isn't that many £ a year.

My advice would be buy it! You'll have a fun 6 months at worst if you regret buying it.

Cheers all.
euans2, I'll look in to those parts, he has got all the service paperwork from the local VW garage, who incidentally I phoned back for some more prices on the seat back cover....
Supply foam and back cover - £350
Supply back cover - £250

So I'll see if there are some localish trim places (KENT) before I contact the others. Keep them coming though cheers.

Here's a thought (not being flippant btw), sod the seat cover!

If it's otherwise sound and a bargain, take your chances, see how it goes for a year and if it passes it's next MOT, treat yourself to new seat then?

sod the seat cover!

Agreed, you'll stop noticing it after a week.

I'd go for it 100%. Half the battle with cars like this is knowing that they've had a reasonable history. A 9 year old Golf, treated well, with FSH is a definite buy.

I bought a similar style of car (10 year old 3 Series, 70k, dealer FSH) a couple of years ago for only and it made a mockery of bangernomics. Would do again.

I know it's not the end of the world it's that you notice it every time you get in the car, but yes I guess you stop noticing after a while.
I just need to convince the better half that we 'need' the car rather than I would like to get it. Wish me luck. 🙂

No idea what they're actually like when fitted but a quick Google suggests that a full set of custom leather seat covers for a Mk5 golf can be had for less that £300.

I've got a Mk2 16v & a Mk4 V5.

Love them both. The Mk2 is a bit special, garaged & makes me smile a lot. The V5 is the auto, heated Recaros etc. Makes a lovely noise.

Love mine. Non dsg, it never fails to impress me after 2 years. Seats can be sorted for sub £200 easy.
Fuel around town sucks but on distance I've hit 40mpg but I needed the wind direction to help me get there!!

Got a few tiny spots of rust I need to attend to, I've had to polish the lamps but that's it. Stick some good tyres on it and you'll not believe the grip on it. I wish I had a longer commute as I look forward to driving it every day.

Wish I had dsg as I'm a lazy driver. Have heard horror stories about them dying and costing thousands but if you get it serviced you'll be pretty safe.

It's also a good bike car. Two bikes with front wheels off no worries.

Couldn't be arsed to read through so sorry if I've repeated someone.
