Last night saw TV Girl in the 3 Arena Dublin with my 18yo daughter . Good Gig, I was about 40yrs over the average age though 🙂
Next gig is Glass Animals in the 3 Arena Dublin in October, again with the daughter, I'd forgotten all about them, saw them in Whelans in Dublin in 2014. From one of the smallest venues in Dublin to one of the largest !!!
Off to The Tower of Song in Brum tomorrow for their Draculas Garage punk afternoon. Bands are Deathfiend and The Dregs. £5 entrance.
Caught an American lad at Rock n Roll Brewhouse last weekend,Bobby Mahoney, just been signed to Steve Van Zandts record label. Cant recommend him highly enough. Another Deadbeat Summer is the cd.
Booked tickets for Opeth at Bristol Beacon for next February, so a nice black metal start to the year, the new album a return to their more metal roots from the prog their more recent albums have been, “The Last Will And Testament” gives a hint…
On my way to see System of a Down & Deftones (Co headline)
don’t listen to either very much anymore but was a big fan back In the day so looking forward to it.
first saw Deftones in 99 - 25yrs ago!
Beans on Toast in Edinburgh on Thursday night in front of 60 people.
AC/DC in Dublin on Saturday night in front of 60,000 people.
Both brilliant gigs.
Wednesday on Wednesday in Brighton coming up
I saw PJ Harvey at the Piece Hall in Halifax a couple of nights ago. She was absolutely amazing - such a stage presence that you could hardly take your eyes off her. She played a lot of her new album and lots of older stuff from her 30+ year back catalogue. Definitely worth the trip up north 🙂

It was amazing, I find her a totally mesmerising stage presence. Returned last night for Pixies, totally different proposition but also brilliant, an assault of "Greatest Hits" over 90 minutes, No let up from Gouge Away to Where is My Mind, Bone Machine the highlight for me.....Its taken 35 years for me to see them, worth the wait.
All points east tomorrow, LCD sound system and the pixies
Blackberry smoke in a couple of weeks, the Lake street dive in Glasgow in January
Busy gig week for me. As well as Button Warehouse Live Lounge & Whiskey Jar Open Mic on Tues & Wed I've also got...
Tonight - June Holland supporting Mora & the Fabulous Wonderfuls
Friday - Sip of Milk & Niamh Finan supporting Sam Steele
Saturday - Grace Kelly supporting Rob Jones & The Restless Dream
Sunday - George Gibson
Tickets have cost me £20 in total and not a penny to Ticketmaster 🙂
Floating Points at Forwards in Bristol on Saturday just gone (31st Aug) was intense, definitely the highlight of the day. Four Tet played a DJ set and it was exactly what I expected of him and I say that in a good way.
Bought two tickets for a mates 16yr old son to see Arab Strap at the Venue in Dumfries on 19th September, he can take a mate/gf and get bus up after school, back home for 00.30.
Lemon Twigs last night in Brighton. Amazing songs played beautifully. Power Pop as good as it gets
Off to the Orkney Rock festival tomorrow, tix for the main event were around £20 which is 8 bands and then loads of free gigs in about 5 different pub venues. These are the types of gigs I try and support, Ticketmaster are scum

Envious! On a slightly different planet, Gruff Rhys at hebden bridge trades club on Monday was brilliant, every time I've seen him I've left with a big happy smile.
donks
All points east tomorrow, LCD sound system and the pixies
I was there! (dnk dnk da dunk da dunk)
Wanted to like the Pixies but they were a million times better in the 80s (admittedly "Cactus" was brill). LCD Soundsystem still awesome. Also saw a bit of the Kills (ok, but terrible sound), Jai Paul (great, but too far away) and a few other things.
Next day was Rally Rally Rally, with a mind-blowing set from Actress. And rain, Some heavy rain.
Totally jealous of anyone who went to Rally in London or Massive Attack's thing in Bristol.
Getting itchy for the handful of shows Floating Points have on the calendar later this year. Hopefully there'll be a proper tour in the spring.
Got UNKLE, billy woods and Ezra Collective all coming up but not for a wee while.
For the Floating Points fans, I’m only an hour into it but it’s going in my YouTube playlist
Both June Holland and Mora & the Fabulous Wonderfuls were amazing this evening. I can't believe it only cost a fiver. Had a nice chat with the wonderful George Borowski too 🙂
Went to see the Kills in Hamburg a couple of weeks ago, 1200 people, great atmosphere but some sound issues.
Amyl and the Sniffers and Fontaines DC in November in Munich. Great opportunities here to see bands in much smaller venues than in the UK.
Been a busy week gig wise.
Gnod at the Golden Lion inTodmorden on Sunday, blimey, they go for it, a tad too loud for such a small venue, but good fun.
Melt Banana at the Brudenell Social club in Leeds on Wednesday. Amazing, full of energy, mad as ever.
Jeffery Lewis and the Voltage last night at the new Greyston Unity in Halifax, simply sublime. Support was very good too in the form of David Cronenberg's Wife.
Tiger Lillies in Leeds on Monday night to come.

I was also there, although I missed Floating Points. the FourTet set was great as was Hak Baker and Greentea Peng on the Saturday.
On the Sunday the highlights were Da Fuchaman (lots of energy), Glass beams (very chilled in the sun), Yard act and at the front for Underworld was very intense which meant that LCD soundsystem felt like an after thought.
Art Brut last night in Edinburgh, it was definitely, absolutely an Art Brut show, 2/3ds good quality shouty indie and 1/3ds Eddie Argos entertaining gibberish. Enjoyed it a lot and if anyone's on the fence about the tour they should probably go, but equally if you're not into their schtick it has not changed in the slightes for at least a decade.
UNKLE, billy woods
Mate bought me an UNKLE ticket for Outernet in London..cool place, saw clipping there.
Where's Billy Woods? Love him!
Reminds me I also managed to see Armand Hammer at Rally! Was daylight and I was totally sober cos we had just arrived, but they were wonderful to see.
Sparse year this year, last gig was Get Down services around March who where ace
Last night was Craig Finn at Clwb Ifor Bach, maybe one of the best gigs I've been to, great story telling throughout
How have I missed UNKLE dates? One of my all time favourite live bands. I was wittering on about them to a friend earlier this week.
Tickets for this went on sale at 10am today. I had two bought by 10.02am

K&D Sessions is the soundtrack to a very hazy time in my life so this is proper exciting.

I bloody love Craig Finn solo. When you want songs that are basically someone just talking and telling sad stories about doomed people, he's your man. Plus it's good for him to get that out his system so Hold Steady shows can be fully joyous.
Tribute Band week for me.
- illegal Eagles last Fri (defo better than the real thing the days !
- Bohemians last Sat (Queen obv).
Both sold out and both V good.
Rush tribute band Moving Pictures tomorrow eve in Nottingham- not seen them but mate was desperate to go, so I am too.
Ben Gorb supported by Harrison Rimmer @ Off The Square in Manchester this evening. Fantastic night! (I then caught the end of THR33's set @ Mash after getting back to Macclesfield 🙂
Saw The Allergies last night in Birkenhead.
If you like old school hiphop and scratching mixed with funk/soul I’d definitely recommend them live.

It was exactly that, with some really nice stories and background in between, the gig was on Sept 11, told the story of his now wife being trapped in the building and escaping in that day, sad but heartwarming

I've seen them a few times now, always good. Was it just the two of them on the decks or did they have Andy Cooper, Marietta and the guy on sax too?

Same here. 4 tickets booked for Festival Hall London....in a box! how times have changed! At least I can dad dance in relative privacy though.
See there's a vinyl box set reissue (obviously). Feel I should buy it as my cd is one of many we ripped off on the night shift when I should have been colouring in on the Mac.
Robyn Hitchcock in Twyford church tonight. Not quite sure what to expect. Fan of the Soft Boys BITD but this is solo.

Yeah, the full line up. They really do a great show don’t they, get the crowd involved. That’s the 2nd time I’ve seen them in Future Yard, great little venue and only 10 minutes away from us.
Tom Hingley at The Castle Hotel in Manc next Friday for me 🙂
I just saw a review of Elvis Costello ,Steve Nieve and another folk were walking out
I saw him maybe 8 years ago in Edinburgh and it was a bit of a bore fest the 1 1/2 hrs he was on just himself
Are all these band above for real names I've never heard of
Off to see Jockey Strapp and the Ruptures soon
Saturday afternoon is Liars At The Witchtrials at Rock n Roll Brewhouse in Brum, looking forwards to it as seen them before. A bit early PJ Harvey/ White Stripes. Then on the evening its to Chas Manns in Kings Heath for Not Quite Dead Yet, ukelele punk in a nice small intimate space.
Ryan Adams for me at the Barbican in York tomorrow night. Probably the 6th or 7th time I've seen him over the years, 2nd time at the Barbican. 2 sets, 2 and a half hours of sad but uplifting music.
Mates 16yr old heading to Arab strap tonight in Dumfries, followed by Franz Ferdinand next weekend and I’ve also got him two tickets to Mogwai next February at usher hall Edinburgh (Xmas presents).
I can’t get to gigs due to my spms so I’m sending him to everything I’d want to go to.
He loved it, I sent Aidan a message earlier to heckle the two “youngest geeky kids” in the audience. He got a free t-shirt as well so he’s going to be riding high on the “fame” at school tmorn, I forgot he’s off to Glasgow tmorns night to see “the last dinner party” at the O2 wi his mate.
Ohhh to be 16 again
Tickets for Mogwai bought, I hope they play the one that goes really quiet then really loud.
Go Team next week, should be good!

We just shot the music video for Mogwai's latest song - God Get's You Back.
Enjoyed doing as we went full bore on the lighting.
Seems very different to other pieces they've done.

It's almost dreampop. Or just shoegaze. Or whatever. Old... but not old Mogwai. I love it. It's also a great video.
Ohhh to be 16 again
I bet that t-shirt doesn't come in skinny teens fit!
Gutted to have missed this Arab Strap tour. Work and stag do clashes.
Just got my tickets for Jason Isbell in November at the Usher Hall, I have very high hopes for this gig.
First gig with my son in October. Said he wanted to go see a young rapping fellow called Nasty C at the Jazz Cafe. Now I like me a bit of the old rap, had a listen to a few bits on youtube, was cool, so bought tickets and we're going. Then I listened to the guys newest album, gawd it's awful .. all R&B slush.. ah well, be nice to have an outing with the lad that isn't bike riding related 🙂
2 days after that I have UNKLE. Not sure how to work the London travel in.

If you showed him a pair of skinny jeans he'd tell you to f-off, skinny jeans went out a number of years ago, these days its all relaxed fit.
Gemma Hayes in Bristol next week, and a ticket obtained for Pixies next May at Brixton Academy. I’ll be there nice and early to grab a place at the front!
Changing my travel plans to make sure I won’t have to leave while they’re still playing, like I did at their Roundhouse gig…
Last 24 hours has seen tickets booked for Maximo Park later this month and then Corteeners in October, both at Pryzm / Banquet Records Kingston. Therapy? Troublegum 30 years in Shepards Bush not too far off now in November.
Hmmm so Me First And The Gimme Gimmes? Could be great, could of course be absolute ****. Anyone seen them live before? I love the albums but also I've seen Fat Mike's approach to live performance with a 50 minute set that had about 6 3 minute songs in 🙂
Ooooooooh. Frank Turner Lost Evenings coming to Edinburgh a year from now, that's a nice birthday present for future me!
Do any of you regular gig-goers use earplugs? I have tickets for Godspeed YBE next week in Manchester and they are meant to be loud AF. I've never used them but apparently you can hear the music fine with modern plugs?
Sometimes I use loop earplugs if the gig is particularly loud, they do work and stop the ringing in the ears later in the night / next day.
Smaller acoustic gigs I don't bother with them, larger gigs - especially if the audience is screaming teenage girls or heavy rock where they've turned it up to 11 then it's worth it.
Managed to see Jack White at the O2 Academy last weekend. Tickets only went on sale on the Tuesday prior but well worth the 450 mile round trip to see the sow.
1200 capacity, so very intimate and my ears are still ringing!
I'm guessing a rehearsal gig for an upcoming tour. Only 3 White Stripes songs, quite a bit of the Raconteurs and most of his new album 'No Name'.
20 odd years since seeing him headlining at Reading & Glastonbury and i still think he's the best live act out there!
I’ve got a cracking weekend booked for November in Bristol.
Therapy? on the Friday night then They Might Be Giants on the Saturday. And a decent bike ride during the day in between. Can’t wait!
I’ve used basic earplugs a couple of times - both at Bob Mould gigs (one electric solo and one full band). My right ear struggles after really loud music and they make a difference. They take out a lot of the top end distortion that he always features but you can then hear more of the tune and the rest of the band. Still take them out for a few songs to get the full experience though.
@Garry_Lager - yes, if it’s going to be a rock, or fairly loud gig, but if it’s going to be mostly acoustic-type music. I saw Gemma Hayes tonight, and I didn’t bother, but there’s a couple of songs ‘Lucky One’ and ‘Ran For Miles’ where everything gets cranked up several notches and the band really get behind Gemma and things get a bit raucous! She’s clearly really enjoying herself too.
I use Rooth ‘plugs, but there’s lots of musicians earplugs with frequency filters that do the same thing, it’s worth getting several pairs and having them on several sets of keys, which is what I do - seeing Tool without them isn’t a good idea, and I’ll be seeing Opeth and Heilung next year…

cobba
Saturday afternoon is Liars At The Witchtrials at Rock n Roll Brewhouse in Brum
@cobba - did this happen? Can't find any listings for Liars touring over here. Be gutted if I missed a local(ish) gig!
Ah, not LIARS ... Liars at the Witchtrials! Soz 🙂
I, Northwind, and a few other friends went to the Queen's Hall yesterday to see The Go! Team on their Thunder, Lightning, Strike! 20th anniversary tour. Really good, a big, energetic, joyful noise from start to finish. The encore possibly didn't quite live up to the main set, but that was because the main set was the complete Thunder, Lightning, Strike! album and that is a hard act to follow!
One of the friends who went was new to the band yet was completely won over, so I reckon that's a win too. 🙂
My next gigs are Public Service Broadcasting and John Grant, both at the Barrowlands in October.
I've seen both Orbital and Leftfield recently, you should be in for a cracker. Hope you've got a disco biscuit or two.
The Vaselines for me next week in Carlisle - no interest from my daughters.......... 😎
Maximo Park at Banquet Records last night. Played the new album in full with some nice commentary from Paul and then played a few of the classics as an encore.

@del, I hope you had as good a time as we did 😀
It was a bit of a family trip, the first time we were all together at a gig in years. No1 Son works in the industry so usually treats me to surprise 'hey Dad, what you doing tomorrow night? I've got us passes to (insert band of choice here) moments so it was nice to treat him.
Anyway, Orbital and Leftfield were properly delivering the goods (apart from 'Melt', what was that all about???).
Mrs A had to dip out towards the end, noise, lights and tiredness were starting to be a bit of a trigger.
Earplugs you say? I used a pair of Screwfix specials for the first half but went commando for the second. My ears are definitely ringing now. The others used decent earplugs No1 Son had spare although Mrs A couldn't get them to stay put.
Whilst wearing mine I could still hear the music, it was quieter. The big bass feel in the air was still there obviously.
I'm 62 so have lost a load of ability to detect high frequencies fwiw.
Lovely moment at the end, as we walked away from the gig, Son #2 hands me a Leftfield tee he bought for me from the merch stall. Which was nice 😀
I'm double booked for tomorrow night.
Mudhoney at St Lukes at exactly the same time as my son's band in Mcchuills.
I feel a bit bad about possibly missing my son's band, as I'd vowed to try to go to all of his gigs that I could. Luckily St Lukes and Mcchuills are fairly close by, so if stage times are kind I might see them both.
Tom Hingley & band playing through The Grand Mal album last night was fantastic.

Off to see some prog rock tonight with Legs on Wheels @ MASH in Macclesfield 🙂
The Golden Dregs on Thursday at the George Tavern. Captivating. Loved their album from last year on 4ad. New one due soon.

Like ChrisL was at the Go! Team the other night, I reckon best I've ever seen them- I caught them once right back when thunder lightning strike was still new and that was great too but the band wasn't as good as the current one. And yeah sure the encore wasn't as good but when you've got a main set this good, that's just fine. Bristol tonight and Dublin tomorrow, if you're even slightly go team curious you should definitely go.
Terrorvision tomorrow! One of these days I will see a band thta hasn't been around for 20+ years. BUT IT IS NOT THIS DAY! Got a wee break after that then off to London to see Biffy Clyro play their first album Blackened Sky, one of my favourite albums ever and hopefully a proper full-on throwback to 2005.
Great gig at the ol' Joiners in Southampton last night - AK/DK with Wampth supporting. Enthusiasm from those fellas playing to 50-60 people was awesome to see. My mate and I bought albums at the end.
For the benefit of this thread. https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/theft-by-ticketmaster it was £30 for the 2 of us, which included a "help restore the Joiners" donation. LPs were £20. ****ing bargain !
Terrorvision last night in Glasgow was a surprise, first time in the venue (Slay) and it's decent, sound wasn't brilliant though. Terrorvision I've seen a bunch of times way back to the 90s and they've always been decent but they seemed really reenergised last night, no sense of by the numbers, and gave us a pretty massive set albeit with some of htem a wee bit slowed down. They're obviously not spring chickens but they've just switched over to marathon not sprint. Obviously got all the singles but a bunch of album cuts too. Just a really good rock and roll show.
(drummer was having a nightmare tbh, every time he tried to do a fill he lost the beat, not sure if that was a monitor problem but tbh the rest of the band could carry it)
Got last minute release tickets to Blossoms tonight at Banquet Kingston, We’ve seen them there before (2020, time flies), they’ve got 5 albums now so put together a cracking set.
I thought a year was going to pass - the first since reformation - that I wasn't going to get to see TWP.
Every date I've been stymied for one reason or another. I was even on a work trip to Exeter earlier this week which meant the chance to see them LITERALLY at the end of my daughter's road on Tuesday was denied - and then I had a cancellation of something else tomorrow, which cleared the way to get a resale ticket for Shepherd's Bush.
So order is restored, the ravens remain in the tower for another year, and I'll be watching Bizarro 35 like I'm meant to.
An excellent Thursday for me. Saw upcoming local band Snowdrop play followed by the Stuart McCallum Quartet who were simply outstanding.
A rare day of no gigs for me tomorrow (unless I change my mind and go and find something!) and then William KZ on Saturday.
Never mind the SPL’s,
does switching off the a/c, actually boost bar sales?
anyway, watching Soilwork, Arch Enemy and In Flames in one night “must be like winning the lottery “ (Anders Friden).
a very enthusiastic crowd:)
The others used decent earplugs No1 Son had spare although Mrs A couldn’t get them to stay put.
There’s a knack to it, if they’re the silicon triple-flange ones - moisten them between your lips, while holding the appropriate earlobe out away from your head, start to push them in with the opposite hand. Sounds awkward, but once you get the idea they fit in neatly and stay in place; the trick is to open up the ear canal so the eartips fit snugly inside. Same with IEM’s with similar eartips or custom tips.
Steve Hackett doing highlights from Genesis’ “Lamb Lies Down On Broadway”, and other Genesis stuff, along with his own solo material on Saturday night. Never did get to see them, missed the “Lamb…” tour because of a ticket mixup, and it’s Hackett’s guitar work that does it for me, his singer sounds like Gabriel and Collins, so it’s a win all round.
