Getting rid of deer in the garden

Before mrs_oab goes out and strangles them with her bare hands....

Does anything keep deer away from a garden/particular plants? They're destroying our garden and leaving ticks as they go.

Sadly the scrum of neighbours cats (7 of them) are useless, the dog in the garden behind is no deterrent. They're coming over fences, walking through alleys or open gates.

You need much larger cats.

Not at all. They're living in an urban garden, somewhere they should not be living, and bringing more and more with them.

I personally would shoot 50-80% of the deer population tomorrow. Roe, red and any fallow unlucky enough to be around.

Not an option between the houses or I would have called some friends a few months ago.

Close the gates?

A mate of mine is a deerstalker.  He's up in Newton Stewart right now with a shotgun.  I could ask him to call round?

Quite a trip from Newton Stewart to Matt's, roughly from his photos, not in a weird stalking way.

what are your options?

1 - cull (numbers will rise again, and they’ll be back)

2 - fence (going to have to be a big one! Not a good look in a small garden)

3 - remove food (grass super short, veg behind nets)

4 - learn to love them (still keep the grass short to reduce visits and ticks)

"They’re coming over fences, walking through alleys or open gates"

I'm impressed they can open gates, maybe you need to shut them a bit more securely?

Auditory deterrents? Maybe ultrasonic if you don't want your neighbours hammering frozen sausages in your lawn.

Or movement? Big wind sculpture thing?

Scarecrow?

@kelvin We all need to eat more (British) venison - a reduction in numbers would actually be good for the deer population…

Stop it, I’m still hungry.

Long been an advocate of eating more animals that can run free.

Our butcher does some good ones. So little fat they might not pass for sausages with some people!

You need a couple of bears or mountain lions. You’ll soon have no deer and leaving the house will come with a whole new level of excitement.

Might not work with Scottish deer but electric fences have been fairly effective for my dad in S. Wales.

Allegedly peeing round the perimeter marks it as your territory although not sure I would fancy defending it against a large stag.

@slowol - Why are you trying to keep your dad out?

Or is it South Wales keeping your dad out?

Please can we have more information?

Get a dog. Mine would love a deer to dare to come into the garden.

This.

Look on it as a bonus rather than a problem.

If you can’t simply shoot them because they’re urban, could you not try to “bust a cap in dey ass?”*

* Disclaimer: I am NOT urban

To repel Deer, you need the opposite of Deer.

A sign saying ‘Best regards’ should sort you right out.
