I spent the weekend clearing out a corner of the garden, my wife made a throwaway comment that “a sauna could probably fit in there”. Space is about 6ft by 4or5ft.
Presumably a sauna is just an appropriate shed, a/couple of bench seats and a sauna heater with coals… perhaps not a ludicrous proposition and need not cost the earth.
Has anyone got their own sauna in their garden? And any recommendations?

Mate has got something like this......seats 4, 5 at a push. Tho nice to lie down which would reduce #s.
It has insulation etc for heating efficacy.

Make sure there is a bench long enough to lay down on. You will want to lay down.
Make sure there is some seating at 90 degrees from the other seat. You don't want to face the other people and don't want to turn around too much every time you talk. The high bench in mine also can be lowered level with the other one.
Make sure there is lots of high quality insulation in the ceiling AND the walls.
Spend more on nice wood to sit on or lean against you can use cheaper stuff on the other walls and ceiling. You do not want to be sitting on a knot as they can really heat up to the point of blistering you apparently.
Over spec the heater so it is warm in 10-15 minutes as, although you may think it is no issue to wait 30-40 minutes, you want to be able to be reasonably spontaneous.
The heater is a glorified kettle element with a timer. I bought a Havia which is, apparently, a good name and haven't had a problem in 10 years.
Get a big armoured cable to run the power to the sauna, it draws quite some power.
Fit either a selection of lighting or dimmable lighting. Sometimes you want to laydown and read, sometimes you want to dim the lights and 'chill'
Sex is the sauna is sweatier and less comfortable than the movies would have you believe. Get frisky and then return to the house for completion.
If you read my post, I advise against sex in the sauna.

I will take your word for that. The water is in a closed cycle and I never fancied sitting in spunk soup so never tried it.
I've been looking at one since visiting Helsinki over Easter and getting some decent Sauna time in. Love it.
Been looking at a Barrell sauna but figured that a wood-fired stove would be the best option given where I'd like to site it.
Alternatively, I could simply go and join the local gym for about 5 years and save myself a wedge of cash.

Make sure you put it on a separate WiFi RCBO in the fuse box so you can switch it on from your phone when you're out on your bike half an hour from home in winter. Or April.

Electric sauna is basically a kettle element behind a shield with some stones (coals) on top to look pretty and pour water onto.
It takes about 15 minutes to get my sauna up to 'nice and warm' or maybe 25 minutes to go as hot as the heater allows.
There is a timer dial that allows you to set a certain amount of time before it turns itself on so it you are planning on riding for 2 hours, you set a 1 hour 45 delay before starting the sauna. A simple clockwork dial but it seems to work okay.
I ended up in some sauna over in Amsterdam many moon ago. Bit of a culture shock as it was one of those where clothes of any type weren't allowed.
Now I think about it it might have been a brothel. Bit drunk, really stoned, so details are a bit hazy 😕
I was in a public wood burning sauna in Helsinki and a group of guys in their 60s and 70s who were regulars had a little break in the changing rooms and were necking bottles of 8 per cent beer. Respect!
Ah yes, the surprise of Scandinavian sauna etiquette when no one warned me, pre internet day's of being able to Google such things. Ahem.
Watching this with interest. We're about 200m to the sea, so cold dip followed by garden sauna is very much on our radar - mainly cause I saw a random Insta ad one time. The ad suggested an electric sauna would be about £1 a go - 3Kw heater, 35c/ unit, 1 hour (20 minute to warm up, 2x20 minute sessions).
The OH found a few Lithuanian companies supplying them to Ireland (where we are) for about €7k or so; for an extra 1.5k they'll also send a Lith over to help erect it.
