Excellent! Now a £53 watch is deemed too expensive on a STW watch thread! That has to be a record? 😀

Theres a good selection on Amazon, and some good offers

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=g+shock&x=0&y=0

It took me ten years of abuse to wreck a G Shock. I saw off a couple of considerably more expensive 'posh' watches in that time.

If your worried about them being too big and ugly, buy a women's one. They're not even remotely lady-like. Just a bit smaller

whats wrong with a 7quid casio?

It's £7 for a reason. It won't last 5 minutes.

I got one of THESE and it great. £50 is nothing for a watch that's going to last for years.

get a waveceptor one - then it's always the right time 😉 ( even more so than a regular digital watch ).

I've got the second cheapest Casio from Argos for riding. Lightweight, waterproof, don't care if I land on it. Going strong on original battery after 4 years or so 🙂

Ha whatever, wont last? I've had 2 casios and the first is a good 10 years old on the same battery and perfect and the 2nd got smashed by a big rock body boarding but lasted many a dh outing.

Ive got a gshock that i found on a road in singapore after it got runover by a truck and was left unharmed, but its hauge and clunky, 2 very good reasons to keep it the fek away from my wrist when riding, i bet the strap is even strong enough to snap your wrist if you get it caught

its not a deal of expense barney, its practicality, keep the tag for the dance floor

i have a scar on the back of my hand from my g shock from when i broke my scaphoid ... was forced into the back of my hand. stopped wearing it to ride after that - lucky i didnt break more bones in the back of my hand.

7 quid casio does well for me too

I'm with the WTF crowd, I like expensive watches as much as he next person, but what is the point? I've a load of "cheep" £20-£50 watches for day to day wearing and looking to buy an expensive one for special occasions, and had a timex expedition (~£15) with a canvas strap for outdoorsy stuff for ages. Before that it was a digital/dial casio one (had some kind of bullbars over the screen). Lasted utill I lost it at uni.

For a watch as big as the g-shocks I'd expect a bit more functionality, some wrist mounted GPS's are smaller!

oh yeah - i always put my watch on my pack's sternum strap to avoid that leverage thing on the wrist when riding, or more importantly, falling off.

I've been a bit of a G-Shock fan since I discovered (many years ago) the best way to clean the fabric straps was to chuck the entire thing into a catering dishwasher and then dry it under the grill...

There ain't many watches I'd want to try that with!

I have three G Shocks - one smartish Giez (fully analogue), one I don't use any more with a black metal strap that's ana/digi and a fully digi for riding and training. All around £100, all bomb proof - the fully digi has lasted 12 years so far without missing a beat.

The analogue one is solar atomic so super accurate and almost never needs a battery change.

Brilliant watches! I cannot see the point in spending £1000s on a cheesy shiney watch that's less accurate and needs servicing. When I see one I just think "oh dear"

I had a waveceptor one and it was rubbish - would update every morning with a new time - 1 hour ahead - went to Austria and it then updated 1 hour behind...came back to UK and it was 1 hour ahead again - it got replaced and I got a ProTrek instead - G-Shock robustness but has a few gimicks on it - compass (which seems to work), barometer (needs calibrating regularly), temperature - seems to be slightly accurate by a couple of degrees and altimeter - needs calibrated regularly.

I have 1 watch and it does me for all occasions - it does make me look a bit like a cross between Ben 10 and Action Man but I don't care. Lasted me 3 years so far and been superb, expecting it to keep going for a good few more years (at the least!).

I'm in agreement with Surf-Mat about the expensive watches - don't see the point (saying that the watch I now have wasn't cheap).

I have a number of watches. I like watches, some people don't. I'd not criticise anyone for spending their hard-earned on anything they like (except perhaps drugs and illegal firearms)
Be it cheap or expensive, if I think it's nice or will serve it's purpose (yes, I know. Tell the time!) then I'll get it. Rolex, Tag and Gucci for dress which are all very nice. Seiko divers for daily wear and Polar or G-Shock for the rough and tumble stuff. I have a MR-G titanium G-Shock that is still going strong some 12 years on and still looks the business. It's been in many a bike crash, house fire, RTA the list goes on. It was expensive for a G-shock but it's cost of ownership has been £20 per year so far, so not bad imo.
At £50 for a G-shock, go for it.

£7 casio FTW.

Cheap, light and low profile. Has a stopwatch and a light so you can use it for timing laps at 24hr races. Main reason I got it, for wearing at races.

I got one of THESE and it great. £50 is nothing for a watch that's going to last for years.

I've got something similar which has survived not only the kind of abuse I give stuff, but also one night when I decided to demonstrate it's invincability by taking it off and smacking it pretty hard on the marble top of the bar I was propping up at the time. After a while I decided it was a bit chunky, so now have one of these for adventure days
[img] [/img] - about £15 IIRC, no date, but still going strong inspite of my best attempts

If you want a cheap watch for cycling that won't fall apart, i imagine one of thesE:
http://www.breo.com/item/Brand_RoamWatchGreen_195_0_2210_2.html

know lots of people who have them for work, however I want something that has the date (doing shifts I never have a clue what date it is!).

I've got an old G Shock that I bought maybe 10 years ago and I haven't even had to change the battery yet. I got an outdoors one now with waveceptor and that it equally brilliant. Not for every situation (I have a Tag Senna for dressing up) but brilliant watches, highly recommended.
