Questions for those familiar with driving in Europe
Is diesel cheaper / dearer / similar in price to UK?
or - should I fill up before the chunnel or after...
Also - French tolls. Are they payable by card or cash only?
TIA
Diesel in France is quite a bit cheaper, I seem to remember paying around 1.30 euros / ltr (more expensive on the autoroutes) last year. Petrol is more expensive then it is here.
I tend to fill up before I leave, because the petrol stations are few and far between, not nearly as common as they are over here. When I'm in France I just fill up when I can / where it's cheapest, which is usually the supermarkets. Never been on te chunnel, so don't know about the stations near there.
Most tolls you can pay cash or card.
France £1.20 (E1.44)
Italy £1.38 (E1.65)

My mother just got back from Italy, diesel is €1.58
Last summer IIRC I was paying in Euros about what it was in pounds so by the time you factored in the crap exchange rate it wurnt much different.
Thanks all - fill up before going through the big mountain then 😀
Diesel about 1.5 €/L
Don't know where everyone is filling up in italy but today in turin diesel is 1.74EUR.
Enjoy your cheap fuel in rip-off britain.
Fuel is MEGA expensive in Italy, when the 23% rise in VAT comes in summer fuel is expected to reach €2 a litre..
France is cheaper by about 10-15 cents a litre.
My local garage charges €1.80 for petrol
In comparison the UK is reasonably priced.
**** me adi 1.8 for petrol :s now that is scary...
My mother just got back from Italy, diesel is €1.58
She clearly had an interesting time
and reckon on the tolls costing you almost as much as the fuel...
Depends where you are going to, most the tolls in france can be avoided. Switzerland pass is cheaper for the year than the monte bianco tunnel.
If you fill up at the fuel stations along the motorways it is about the same as UK prices.
Head into towns/cities and its quite a bit cheaper. Similar situation to UK motorway services.
Fill up at the SuperMarche in France. Much cheaper....and if you are running an old diesel, bung some heating fuel in....even cheaper!!!!
French tolls can be cash or card. Just choose your lane.
