Friends computer keeps getting the following error when opening new web pages:
Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error.
Happens in EI7 and Chrome. Googled the issue and it appears to be malware. AVG doesn't clear the problem
Any suggestions please?

Malware is not a virus - so a virus scanner may not deal with it. (though some do).
You need some anti-malware.
Try Ad Aware Free from http://www.lavasoft.com
and/or
Spybot Search and Destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

avast for anti virus and malwarebuyes for the other spyware / malware

You might also need the SmitFraud remover and Combofix, but use them with caution as you can stuff the whole PC up quite nicely.
