[#10006851]

Now, apparently its all the rage, Jnr's been asking me to download it, so I did.

Wowsers, don't just don't. I'm resting up now after 3hrs of er, suitability testing. Reminds me of the addiction to Doom way back, and I've a feeling I've only just scratched the surface...

Anyone else been sucked in?

Kids I teach at school are mad for it. Some to a properly worrying degree...

The Floss is this year's dab.

Our kid (10 yo) seems to have come out the other side of it recently, was huge for a few months but he's a bit bored of it now.

Given it a bit of a go myself but basically suck at any game demanding real dexterity on the controls, and hiding in a bush all day isn't that rewarding a strategy.

Practise building. Don’t worry too much about shooting. The answer is in the name FORTnite.

It’s a great business model and my two sons are addicted to it. Plenty of bans for sub-optimal behaviour....

Been playing for a little while the secret seems to be jump around as there is no energy penalty. Building helps yes but playing in teams you just get one guy to pin them under fire while others sneak around and shoot them in the back.

H1Z1 arrived on PS4 the other day had a quick blast of that and while it’s clumsy it doesn’t have the forts and no bunny hopping.

One of my boys is heavily into PUBG. My reflexes these days mean I'm hopeless at these games. Rather hilariously my dad (over 60) is an ex-firearms officer and loves playing games like Battlefield and Call of Duty. He is pretty good, and his command of yoof parlance is hilarious. Overhearing him talking to gobby 9 year olds whilst wiping the floor with them is one of my more entertaining pursuits.

That is ace! Although 9 year olds should really be playing something else IMHO!

FFS is that it only JUST out? I would rather play anything other than something out of Daybreak after the way they utterly ruined Planetside 2. If you think it's clumsy now wait till they start "improving " it.

As someone in my outfit said, the reason they called themselves Daybreak is because every day the game breaks. Sadly he wasn't wrong.

Oh, if anyone fancies a game I'm my epic account tag is Squirrelking. I can play on XBox or PC so can pretty much play with anyone (it's cross platform all ways except XBox - PS4).

Yup just out FFS!

It’s free so absolutely nothing lost if it fails.

I tried Fortnite, admittedly only for a few games but just didn't get on with it. I can see the appeal but the cartoony graphics, 3rd person view and build element didn't do it for me - I struggle enough in PUBG without having other stuff to worry about :p

I thought it was the best thing ever! For about 3 weeks.

Sadly for me the skill curve is near vertical and if you want to do anything bar hide to the end you need to play for a lot more than 20 mins a day!

This is why I was vetting Fortnite, my son is 9. He’s been coming home with the “...but all my friends are playing it...” line and seeing as its a free download and its half term I thought I’d try it out for him.

I think its OK, after all we all gre up with toy soldiers and war machines, plus he’s time limited by Account on the XBox any way.

I found the same.

he’s time limited by Account on the XBox any way.

If he has a restricted account you may need to do the dance of the XBOX settings to work out which to enable to get it running.

OT Rant: This has become the bane of my existence, I'm close to just letting my daughter have an unrestricted (but supervised) account because every game seems to need slightly different settings but won't tell you which ones. There's usually an hour and a half of trial-and-error, working out which needs enabling. Surely there's an easier way - I feel like my dad did when trying to set the VHS back in the mid-80s...

My kids are in to it too. I restrict the time they spend on it as well. They come home with tales of how their friends spend hundreds of pounds on skins and emotes etc. "All my friends have...". Obvs I'm the meanest Dad so they have to mow the lawn or wash the car to earn the money if they want to spend it on that stuff.

The behaviour model seems a lot like gambling. The games are short, you are always on the verge of 'levelling up' or getting a 'Battle Royale' or something so it's difficult to put down. Your friends all play and they buy stuff so there is peer pressure.

In March this year Fortnite made $225,000,000 dollars for EPIC games. Not bad for a 'free' game is it?

It's handy as leverage as a parent but obvs I prefer it when they are down the woods practicing jumps.

Unfortunately I think it's PC/Mac, XBOX One, PS4 and iPad/iPhone only.

Yup 360 has very little game support anymore I’m afraid. In fact I think it’s now classed as not supported for new games.

Sadly yes you can GSI-Man, number one son has it and is fixated until the Xbox parental (see above I'm a terrible parent, non of his mates have timers, cant i spend all my cash on toot comments) timer goes and then he reappears to grunt at us once more.

Yay!

James

How’s he managed that it hasn’t been released for 360 as it can’t run the engine?

Drac yeah as long as its working then nothing lost. They absolutely destroyed Planetside though, mainly in the name of H1Z1 (diverted devs, "tested" Cross platform settings etc.) then when everyone got bored with zero development they put an utter imbecile in charge and buggered everything up. What was once a 10 or so server game has a handful of servers and all the dedicated players are long gone. Which is worse when you consider it is the only 1000+ player mmofps.

Really worried about the effect of this game on my 8 year old. If he's not playing it, he's watching videos about it, if he can't do that he's talking about it, or playing it with his little brother. It's a constant source of tension in the house, and I'm sick of the stupid dances he seems to think is okay to do in the street.

He's on a strict ration with it and I'm just waiting for an excuse to ban it completely - wife is more liberal, so need to pick my moment.

That's just an age thing, if it wasn't Fortnite it would be something else. Remember TMHT? At least he's not running about battering lumps out his pals with lumps of wood.

He will grow out of it, you just need to be patient and accept that you have a small pain in the arse* to deal with until he's a big pain in the arse. Banning stuff for no other reason than you not liking it is just mean.

*nothing personal, they are all pains in the arse, my daughter is obsessed with My Little Pony and often does dialogue in a faux American accent which drives me nuts.

Have the same issues with it here. From our 14 year old. No problem with him playing it, or acting like a tit with all the dance moves. I keep telling him he looks like he is having a fit.

Although, when he thinks its ok to stay up until 4:30-5:00am playing it, it becomes a problem. First time it happened, he got told if it carries on there will be consequences (no pudding etc).

Second time when confronted, with quite a flippant attitude, said 'i suppose your going to take my xbox away now" which was met with a reply of "no, I'm not". When he came home from school he couldn't find his controller anywhere. He gave me that look and i said "told you i wasn't going to take your xbox away". After a couple of days, he had the controller back.

After the 5th/6th time of staying up, enough is enough. I asked him seeing as he wasn't going to listen to us and do what he wants, what does he think his punishment should be. In a stinking mood he bellowed at me, "fine, i will delete fortnite and never play it again". Instantly, he tried to change his own punishment, as i made him go to his xbox and delete the game as he said he would.

After a week he started asking for it back. I set him a challenge on another game. If he got the achievement he could have the game back. Nothing difficult, just a challenge. He tried for 30 mins and gave up. He always gives up on things instead of trying to achieve things, which was the point of the challenge. That was a month ago. He is still too stubborn to even try and do it. Quite petty on my part, i know. But will stick with it and see how long he lasts.

He still plays the xbox, just not fortnite. But that's what his friends play and he desperately wants it back.

All the staying up happened on school nights, yet he couldn't work out why he was so tired all the time. And he still hasn't worked out why i wouldn't let him sleep past 8:00 am on a weekend during all this.

@gnusmas

I'm not one for letting software control your kids for you, well, actually that's not true, I think it's brilliant, but still. Parental Controls!!! Get that sucker to switch itself off!
