Obviously, the first six were enough.
The original concept behind the Walking Dead graphic novel was to create an Eastenders type saga in a post zombie apocalypse world. So it has kinda done that, but it did it by being event TV - so it kinda missed it's own point.ย
Avatar.
Avatar should have stopped before even starting. It was a novelty computer animated 3d film to show off animation studio tech with wafer thin storyline and a solid 2.5 hours of exposition dialogue and characters shallower than a puddle. Look! Military person doing miltary things! What will he do in this film? BLOW STUFF UP! Look! Environmentalist scientist person! Doing environmentalist scientist things! What will she do in this film? SABOTAGE THE MILITARY GUY!
Thinking of computer animated films, has anyone said Tron yet?
Also, Michael Bay Transformers films. Possibly like avatar should have stopped at none films.
Alien should have stopped after two
while I'll admit it's not a popular opinion, I think it should've stopped after one.ย
I can see your logic here. I actually watched Aliens first (of the two), back in the day on rented VHS IIRC, and loved the sci-fi marine film aspect of it, the tech and stuff. I then watched Alien on TV and thought it was very good, the slow-moving suspense of the first part.
I watched the two on subsequent weekends with my 12-year-old son recently, Alien first. He wasn't impressed by the second one, he said it's basically the same film as the first but with more people - the aliens get discovered, there's a bad crewmate, everything goes very strobe-y, there's a long drawn out destruct sequence, etc...!
Separately, I can defininitely agree on Only Murders In The Building. By series 4 it was just getting silly, plot-holes and dei ex machina all over the place.
Also Stranger Things definitely changed character (jumped the shark?) in Series 2 with the Lost Sister episode, but has sort-of been hanging on. It stopped having any darkness in it, even in the dark bits. I could go on a separate rant about Why Everything On Netflix Looks The Same, but there are better-written articles about that... ๐
How dare you
ย
You could argue the final original cast film - Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country - is the best one. (it isn't its the Wrath of Khan, but its still very good.)
The final two TNG films were stinkers though.
I totally agree, but lets be fair the unsung hero of all the movies was Shatner's corset 😉ย
The JJ Abrams / Kelvin timeline reboots are a but of mixed bag too.
a Mixed bag of shite (IMO).
My own feeling on Abrams is basically that he shouldn't be allowed near any sort of creative project especially anything with 'Lore' where fans that know the back stories of all the characters, He suffers from a stunning ability to miss the key plot points of his own work, fail to develop characters and never finish a sodding project. I mean has anyone ever watched 'Lost' all the way through? I know I've not, and I'm certain my life is better for it.ย
Apparently there is a new original film in development that won't be based on any of the existing tv or films.
Might be interesting, the thing that I disliked about the last season of Picard was all the crowbarred in fan service and TNG nostalgia.ย As a Franchise it often works best when they time-shift and develop a whole new ship/crew (or space station) without clunky cross-over or call-backs (IMO of course)....ย
Only Fools and Horses should have finished with the episode where they became millionaires.
It was meant to but the public and the BBC kept demanding more scripts...
Blackadder, they shouldn't have made the first series but should have made the second, third and fourth.....🤔ah wait how would that work.🤣ย

This seems to be the key issue with a lot of things. You have a good flim/series, that is well shot and tightly written as a one shot deal. It's well edited and, when released, earns good review, maybe a cult following and a wadge of cash for the studio.
This last bit leads the studio to the conclusion that they can make more money from a sequel/prequel/reboot because the fans love it and the director they have on speed dial has not lost them money yet.
And then we get shitfilms and/or endless dadcore BS that goes straight to streaming. And yes, Jason Statham, I am looking at you with that last comment. I mean, how much money does he need for his mortgage?
Has anyone mentioned Red Dwarf yet? I rewatched them all from S1 to 8 over the last couple of years and watched the final episode of S8 over Xmas. That series was a complete mess, even in comparison to the mess of the previous two series. I felt relief when I got to the last one!
ย And yes, Jason Statham, I am looking at you with that last comment. I mean, how much money does he need for his mortgage?
Is that the plot of his latest film?

Stop it. Statham, Dwayne the Rock, Liam Neeson, Channing Tatum. These are the centrepieces on which Saturday night in front of the TV with a takeaway, recovering from a full day of parenting, are built. It's not high art, it's not supposed to be; but it's entertaining.ย
Now if you'd said Mark Wahlberg, I'd've agreed. He's been putting out some reprehensible dogmess in the last couple of years
@nicko74. Sorry, but have you watched "The Beekeper" or "A Working Man"? His schtick was fine when it was the first Transporter film, it's now really, really tired.ย
Obviously I will watch them, but I yearn for the time that someone forces him to do something that will actually stretch his talents, like Shakespear. He might make an excellent Hamlet.
Agree on Marky Mark though. His last one has been on my watchlist for a while now and I just haven't been able to summon the energy to press play.
😆 I have! Both were really quite earnest, not as tongue in cheek as the Transporter films, and were the worse for it. Also watched 'Blitz' on Prime in the last couple of weeks, which is really not good - it's Statham in a gritty, Luther-style London detective film. "Shaat it, you're nicked" and the like. Can't recommend.ย
he said it's basically the same film as the first but with more people
It's the central problem with Aliens. The antagonist could be anything, replace the xenomorph with any other generic 'creature' and the film still works. It's not a bad film per se, it just kills the premise and horror of the first. Plus of course, Alien is a piece of art, the rest are just movies.ย
In the directors cut of Alien, Scott explains why the film isn't any longer (it may even be shorter) than the cinema release, it's because the slow panning shots of the opening sequence; the bridge, the crew spaces are all cut short because the studio felt that audiences just don't have the patience to sit through that sort of build-up anymore, and that makes more room to insert the new sequences. Partly that's the fault of the films that came after it

I agree, the first series was pretty poor and best left forgotten but it was nice to see Blackadder finding his feet in subsequent series.

We have recently watched The Union and {checks} Spenser Confidential. They were perfect takeaway accompaniments.
Completely disagree about

Completely disagree. Yes, they are not highbrow cinema, but whenever I watch a Jason Statham movie, I get exactly what I'm expecting. Which is a Jason Statham movie.
but I yearn for the time that someone forces him to do something that will actually stretch his talents
Whereas I just want to see him stretch his hamstrings, but roundhouse kicking someone in the face.
Back on track- The Old Guard. First film was excellent
the sequel promised much but was in essence a way to set up the storyline for the inevitable third installment. No, if you start a story then FINISH IT
The News
The first season with Richard Baker was good - loved the Indo China Peace Talks and the whole 'end of rationing' thing. Loved the fun stuff at the end of each episode like a story about a Cat with a Telegraph Pole stuck up it.
But season after season now they just seem to be banging on about the same stuff.
Frankly they jumped the shark with the whole 'Donald Trump voted President' thing. Now its just just like any of the other long running franchise trading on existing IP.- Weird toff who looks like Donald Trump get elected as Prime Minister - Then a remake of Donald Trump gets elected President which is just the same thing but with more guns and explosions - yawn
No doubt we'll have Weird Frog that dresses like Del Trotter gets Elected Prime Minster by reading Donald Trump's old scripts next
Even the weather is just more weather - like the same weather but just more of it - rainier rain, hotter hot, stormier storms
What next? World War 3?
