I built one from an old wheel bearing and a chain cable tied to it.
I ended up buying some large 75mm bearings and cutting the shape out of some nice plywood. It ended up around 400mm and is lethal.

I'd not seen one until recently, was impressed how well it spun. Made me wonder about putting full ceramic bearings in one.

Wonder no longer. It's been done many times (search youtube if you can be bothered!)
If you're spinning plain bearings, try it with a compressor before letting go of the bearing.
