Ferry is clearly a lot more relaxing than the road, the boat we used was well equipped and there was plenty to occupy you for the trip.
I considered this for a return trip to the UK, being the lazy sort, and quickly dismissed it due to price. Driving is ace, even in France!

The ferry is ace and works out OK if you have a few people / need a car. We get a lot of people using it to come and visit us. The Bilbao ferry, or the Santander one.

You can also take your bike on the ferry cheaply without a car. We pick people up from the ferry that way and it's funny seeing them cycling off the ferry with a big rucksac. There are always a few tourers comming off the ferry with loaded up bikes too, it looks brilliant.

My parents went to bilbao, sailing is a fair bit longer but a lot quicker to get to destinations much further down France in the car once you are out. They got lost in Spain as the sat nav didn't work but survived! I don't think they would do it again as although they spent less time in the car the overall travel time was still about a day more than if they took their usual route from Portsmouth straight over. As said above, driving in France is amazing, it's worth doing and just going through all the little villages, particularly in the big wino regions, they are awesome. Drive in the afternoon and you probably won't see anyone for hours as the French shut up shop and snooze so it's ideal for a quiet hassle free drive around!

The Pont Aven by Brittany ferries to santander is a lovely vessel - more like a mini cruise ship. Good bars and edible food. Clean and well presented. They even have an on board art exhibition of breton art and a podcast to go with it so you can walk around the ship seeing the exhibits with a guide.

We often go to the pyrenees that way and then drive back across france in the camper van. Once you've calculated diesel, tolls and other costs it isnt much more expensive.

We did this in the Summer. Quite expensive, but very convenient. The ferry (Pride of Bilbao) was very tired, though. Since we sailed, Brittany have taken over the route, so it may be better?
Drove 'home' through France.
As convenient as it was, going to drive both ways this year (I want to drive over this)

I went down to ride with Doug on the Pride of Bilbao in September. P&O were bailing out of the route. They had some hopes of selling the business but it isn't now a P&O line. 'twere pleasant, although I was happy to get off it, especially on the way back. ๐Ÿ™‚
