[#11135745]

Made the decision to spend my hours exercise out for a walk with the family. We got to the junction near my house and three guys, all around the same age rock up to the junction, hilariously one shouts left the other right and two of the three pull straight out as one of the only cars on the road goes past.
I got back and checked the Strava segment, just to make sure my shouts of anger were not in error.... Sure enough three guys out, all live in different places near each other in Stockton on Tees, all out for a quick hour oh sorry nope....try 125km and 4h40 or so!

One has a nice picture of himself up at Hamsterley as his profile pic so maybe he comes on here. If so and you're reading this, good effort mate!

(cough... male hen)

Where has this idea that you’re only allowed out for 1 hour come from?!

Shouting angrily at strangers and then stalking them online. Totally sound behaviour.

There is no limit in England. It is a recommendation not a rule.

I don't really see an issue here as long as they maintain 2m distance. They are only touching their own bikes and not coughing/breathing over other pedestrians. Surely going to the supermarket is more risky, and we are all still doing that.

Not the time, it's the three people not from the same household that appears to breach the rules

Same here. 3 dads out together whom I know from the local schools. One an NHS consultant. Hmmm.

They shouldn't be out riding together, but this 1 hour max per day isn't a thing either.

It's not even a recommendation is it? I thought it was an off the cuff remark from a doorstepped minister

I thought Boris said it at one of the daily briefings? I may be wrong mind.

IT'S

NOT

****ING

HARD

one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household...

...These reasons are exceptions - even when doing these activities, you should be minimising time spent outside of the home and ensuring you are 2 metres apart from anyone outside of your household.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others

15. Can I exercise more than once a day if I need to due to a significant health condition?

in order to reduce the spread of infection and protect those exercising, travel outside of the home should be limited, as close to your local area as possible, and you should remain at least 2 metres apart from anyone who is not a member of your household or a carer at all times.

I disagree. That is completely subjective guidance.

So how long outside is OK and how long is too long?

Report them to the police.

I'm not reporting them, the police have more important things to do.

Where has this idea that you’re only allowed out for 1 hour come from?

I thought it was recommended to exercise for about an hour? Government website - "advice is to remain at home and to exercise outside for only a short period (one hour) a day..."

But fair enough over 4 hours is fine, does that part of the argument really matter?

Hens are female.

@Drac - I think a 'Male Hen'.... is a cock.... sorry you didn't get that.

Shouting angrily at strangers and then stalking them online. Totally sound behaviour.

Everyone needs to try new hobbies....

I don’t really see an issue here as long as they maintain 2m distance.

WE have been told NOT to do something, to help stop the spread and hopefully save lives? These adults ignored that for their own selfish needs. I want to go back to work to earn money. I want my kids to go back to school and I kinda really want people to stop dying and staff to stop having to put their own lives at risk to save others. I TOTALLY agree going to the shops is worse but that is not the point. EVERYONE on this website wants to get on their bikes, meet mates and ride.

Most of us are not doing because we are not selfish W*nkers....

I asked about the 1 hour thing elsewhere. It seemed to be from GOve's interview where he was stopped in the street and made up some numbers.

Watching the news yesterday they repeated the advice at one point and specifically said that no time limit had bee put on excercise.

what does minimise mean then, if it's not hard? 5 minutes? 4 would be less? So 5's not minimising it.

Asked on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show how long the advice to take “one form of exercise a day” could go on for, the Cabinet Office minister said: “Obviously it depends on each individual’s fitness, but I would have thought that for most people a walk of up to an hour or a run of 30 minutes or a cycle ride is appropriate.”

A walk of an hour, or a run of 30 minutes, or a cycle ride.

But it depends on each individual's fitness.

(I do agree, nearly 5 hours is a bit of a push if you aren't a pro mind)

Obviously there isn't an absolute number or a one size fits all but I think most (sensible) people should know if they are "minimising their time spent outside the home". For shopping it's easy: Go to shops, buy things without excessive browsing, go home. For exercise it is a bit trickier. For example a 4 hour pootle round the country lanes is not minimising time spent outside the home if the sole purpose of the trip is exercise.

Maybe speak to Greater Manchester Police. They'll know what to do.

how many calories is some?

In the end, if you can look in the mirror and think you aren't taking the piss, I think that's the best you can aim for. Trouble is that some people either don't care or have no concept on what taking the piss looks like.

This is the nub of it, people aren't using it for exercise it's a veil to go out for a bimble

BURN THEM ALL!!!
It used to be so much easier in the middle ages with pitch forks and flaming torches.

It's easy really. Going hard for an hour is probably going to burn more calories and get you more out of breath and sweaty than a 3 or 4 hour bimble.

II understand that there's a risk of injury associated with cycling, but apart from that, what's the risk to oneself or anyone else of going for a long ride? 2 m apart, not coming into contact with anyone or anything else - zilch risk, I think.

Pedalling up & down the Cuckoo Railway track may be different, however. (Local reference)

going hard though, stresses the CV system making us fat lycra clad types more likely to need help from the NHS when we collapse with a heart attack. And surely going faster makes us more likely to crash. And anyway, we all know that long Z2 rides burn more fat and obesity is an additional risk factor in CV19 outcomes.

Christ, it's not easy is it......

If I did do a z2 ride I would need 4 hours to get out my street... suspect my zones are way off though!

I think I'll save my outrage for our local evangelical Christian who is out leafleting round my village - quote 'I've had corona virus so it's all right...' 🙂

In fairness, they're probably only doing it for a Gove hour so it'll be alright...

There’s a lot of Warden Hodges on here isn’t there. So some folk went for a bike ride. So what? Get on with your life it has no impact on you.

I think a lot of folk are bored and looking for something to get annoyed at. Just buy a pack of beers or a bottle of wine and chill out.

To be fair, the situation we’re in at the moment is exactly the one in which people out there acting like male hens really might have an impact on you or someone close to you.
I suppose like many others, I have lots of neighbours - some of whom, generally, act like male hens but you just think “oh **** it, it hasn’t really impacted my day, I’ll just have a beer and get on with something else...” Surprise surprise, the same ones (roughly) are now acting like male hens, but precisely when we’re all depending on one another to do the right thing. Hens gonna hen.

I don’t think the 2m guidance quite works when you’re moving at 20mph or whatever

I got back and checked the Strava segment

Out of interest, how did checking the strava segment give you the details of who had ridden it that day, and whether they were grouped or not? Unless of course you were looking at a flyby.

Did you strava your family walk?

If you can see the segment, then it'll give you kom for today, is one way. I looked at the Box Hill one re above, to see if it was anyone I knew.
