They'll be a few of us (~10) at my place next Saturday. As always, I'm the nominated cook - I'm actually pretty competent in the kitchen. Normal routine is slow cooked lamb shoulder or beef brisket as timings are 'non-critical' - in the oven on low heat first thing, ready when you need it sometime in the evening

Can't be spicy as FIL has dodgy stomach, ideally not pasta or rice for the carb as a couple of them will look askance at 'foreign'

Needs to be something that can largely be prepared in advance, so not a 'pink in the middle roast', beef wellington or steaks. Been there, done that and it's a pita. We'll be at Swinley during the day (some riding, some walking) so appetites should be good

Need two suggestions
One for comfort food another for al fresco dining if weather is good

Thinking Cottage \ Shepard's pie for the former as all can be prepped Thursday or Friday

Come on then hit me with some tasty suggestions

Get some of those platters in that all supermarkets do, save fannying about.

Sounds like a right PITA catering for that day!

Make a massive load of stewed beefy pie filling in advance, when dinner time comes up decant into several oven dishes, lay on pre-made pre-rolled puff pastry topping from the supermarket fridge section and bang in oven. Meanwhile boil up new pots (or mash), serve with buttered peas. Can prepare other pie fillings alongside if required - chicken & mushroom with creme fraiche, mustard and thyme or try butternut squash, butter beans and goats cheese etc.

For carbs you need dauphinoise potatoes. Can be made day before and then shoved in oven to warm up.

If you want you could even do a massive tartiflette. Foreign muck has never tasted so good

Whatever meat or protein you choose, how about potato pave for the carbohydrate? Here is a recipe.

Although they look fancy, they have the following advantages:

- Most preparation and cooking is done well in advance.
- If eating indoors and serving hot food - with the emphasis on comfort food - fry them as per the recipe.
- If eating something lighter al fresco, especially cold meat, you could dispense with frying them and serve cold (or fry and allow to cool).
- Potatoes and cream - what could be better? (apart from frying them).

I've just realised that the link in my post above is to a version of the recipe that bakes the finished blocks of potato in the oven. However, most versions of the recipe fry them instead in oil or butter (I only posted that version of the recipe because all the others use american measurements, e.g. like this one).

Comfort. Slow roast pork belly, roast potatoes and some type of quickly steamed and buttered greens.

Al fresco? the same but pull the pork and serve with sweet potato mash, hot sauce and some decent bread/rolls.

Uninvite anyone who won't eat what you want to cook.

Cook what you want to cook.

Big Mexican?

Chiken fajitas, chilli, rice, nachos, salad, a big bowl of chips and some crispy bread.

Foreign and spicy are you wanting to start a family war Glenn?

Me, I'd serve what ever I fancied cooking that didn't go against allergies and they'd make do, people will eat it regardless

For stuff like that I like the make in advance approach and then heat/cook when ready. Things I do in those circumstances

- lasagna
- stew/casserole
- pies
- bolognese/chili
- curry

Pulled pork also works really well, so does pot roast

๐Ÿ™‚

It needn't be spicy though. And those who don't like foreign can just make a chip butty ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'd just do something like Osso Bucco - there's lots of veal about at the moment, and because its all slow braised then you can just put it on then go out and do something returning to a good smell in food that's pretty much ready to go.

We have done a make your own Pizza thing before. Very well received. Buy a load of pizza bases, some herby passata and mozarella. Selection of cold meats and veg and then let everyone make their own.

Use small bases so you can get them all in the oven though.
