Anyone recommend any nice family campsites around dartmoor area. Don't need any particular facilities and basic sites are fine. Thinking of a week letter boxing, haldon forest, climbing houndtor, maybe a day on the beach. Oh and the obligatory Devon cream tea. Thanks in advance....

Used to be a beautiful little campsite next to the Dart nr Buckfastleigh. Beara Farm or something - just a walk from the otter and butterfly sanctuary which family always love. My usual base for South Dartmoor and South Hams beaches would be Higher Rew in Malborough. Lovely views and a nice walk 30 min walk away to South Beach, Salcombe, or up over the WW2 airfield to the coastal path, Soar Mill Cove, Hope Cove etc. Stunning location.

Harford Bridge, near Tavistock.
River for paddling, facilities good.
Dartmoor not far. If you get the chance, the prison museum is interesting.

Huccaby farm if you want basic basic with a great location.

River Dart Country Park if you want the other end of the spectrum.

Here's another couple for you:

Pretty basic but good location in the heart of the moor - away from it all but still walking distance to a couple of pubs, decent walking and riding from the door)

Also have a google for Cockingford farm near Widecombe - no website but is in cool camping and gets decent reviews. Again quite basic but a great location.

You can also camp in the fields at our local Sports centre in Moretonhampstead. Good central location - easy to get to most places in Devon. It's fairly cheap and you get the use of facilities in the centre - it's just a short walk to shops, pubs etc up in town, and there is some great walking and cycling locally. Local outdoor pool will be opening at the end of the month.
