[i]Fairytale...[/i] is just a brilliant song, it’s got Kirsty M on it, which was never intended, hers was just a guide vocal, but she did such a good job her vocal was left on, and while it has real cynicism it’s got hope and optimism as well.

Heard it (Fairytale) yesterday in a cafe in Settle for the first time this season. Much prefer it to the schmaltz stuff like Last Christmas by Wham.
+1 to Gregg Lake as well. There's a nice dark undertone to that one.
Kirsty M, god rest her soul. Died far too young and a incredible talent.

In fact the whole of Thea's Strange Communion album is an excellent alternative Christmas album.
Really worth a listen.

I don't listen to the radio though and I'm shielded from the commercialism as I work from home ..maybe I have just been lucky or it didn't register as I did go shopping with the missus to the Metrocentre last week .
Greg Lake's Christmas song has always been one of my favourites and will be a little more poignant as he is no longer alive.
Emerson Lake & Palmer were my schoolboy heroes and the first major live band that I ever saw on the Tarkus tour at the Odeon,Newcastle in November 1972 (age 15.)
The passing of both Greg & Keith Emerson were moments where I questioned my own mortality.

That gives me permission to be more grumpy than normal during shifts, becoming a postie is the worst thing you can do if you previously liked Xmas even vaguely. Parcel quantities at least treble from around Black Friday and in the final couple of weeks, the number of cards per house goes positively mental... And yet the rounds are designed to be achievable within contract hours based on typical workloads around August!

Another alternative Christmas song ..and in there hey day this group used to sell out The City Hall, Newcastle for a solid week at a time with their Christmas shows ..
Alan Hull the lead singer was a lyrical genius ..five months after this show and that genius was gone forever ..and the group never really hit the heights again ..
