Do not be fooled by the evidence of your own eyes - it is exactly what it appears to be. A Nazi salute. It is far, far too close for it to be beyond doubt. Imagine a high street, a town hall, your local pub & someone starts banging that out. What are you going to think? It's just a bit of harmless fun? Done as a bet? No, it's offensive & needs to be called out as such.

I dunno. Personally I agree it was deliberate but wouldn't completely write off other explanations, such as "overexcited idiot in the heat of the moment tries to make 'giving heart' gesture and makes a monumental mess instead".

Well, technically it is – but both the German Nazi Party and the Italian Fascist Party (amongst others) started using it in the 1920s and 30s. But obviously, it is now most closely connected to the Nazis and surely Musk knows that full well.
I've seen a fuller video where he says something like "I'm reaching out with my heart to you" after one of the gestures. I've certainly seen folk do the heart-pump action previously.

When you are standing on that platform, with that power, you have a responsibility to think carefully about what you are saying and doing, and the potential consequences, so suggesting that Musk was just a bit excited and doing some edgy trolling is a pretty weak excuse. Musk is all about power without responsibility.
Anyway, on a lighter note, the entertainment lineup for the inauguration suggests that the fascists still have the worst music.
The left in USA have just been soundly beaten by egotistical monsters who don’t even try to hide it.

I think if he had any sense of duty or responsibility for his role in government, or any shred of respect for people in general, the vicitms of Nazi Germany, their descendants, he would apologize, but it appears he could not care less. All this talk of “attack” and “win” and left vs right. Forget all of that. This “gesture” should be and is being called out for what it is. A white suprematist salute by a leading member of the new government of the most powerful country in the world. It’s 100% wrong and history has taught us (so many time) what venturing down this path leads to. It needs to be stopped and no matter which side you voted for, it should always be wrong and stopped. If (for any reason) you think this is okay, you are equally in the wrong and that’s what the issue is here. Musk is seeing how far he can go both at home and abroad because he wants it to be okay to discriminate and he wants allies in places where he can derive financial value which further increases his influence and ability to erode values. Trump is a prime example of that - a useful idiot. AFD (Tesla Gigafactory) Reform and UK (massive investment in renewables and tech) and both countries with declining natural populations and labour shortages (Robotics - Optimus) VAST opportunities for Musk, but only if he can erode protections. This is what the minority parties are for.
Musk is many things, but he’s not stupid. He’s no genius but does seem to have a gift for long term planning and investment, particularly in targeting where the pinch points are.

If there's no backlash against someone with extraordinary power to influence politics and people behaving like that then where's the line in the sand and what's the appropriate response when it's crossed? For all the right-wing rhetoric of there being a woke mind virus infecting the left it's clearly the opposite, a fascist/populist mind virus infecting the disillusioned masses and it's being spread via social media.
At this point though I don't know what the answer is, you can't reason with it (that's been tried for years already) and those benefitting from it now hold all the power. The UK (even if the government had the balls) is far too weak to have any impact (e.g. banning social media companies that don't moderate such disinformation, banning Tesla, massive tariffs on US imports etc.), maybe the EU has the power but they won't do it either and without decisive action I don't see how the issue isn't just going to get worse. As a child at school I never really understood how fascism spread across Europe seemingly so easily, I do now.
It might be hyperbolic but unless something happens the US could have seen it's last free and fair elections. I'm hoping the US economy crashes if Trump instigates a trade war with China and the EU, if instead the US economy strengthens then he's just going to become even more popular and will be allowed to get away with pretty much anything he wants.

Well his current support for Tommy and various other people with Nazi tendencies sort of seems to indicate he’s not particularly ashamed.

Wow. He hasn't dropped some litter. He's given multiple Nazi salutes while the whole world watches. This is for his next political target, Germany. Their elections are next month, and increased instability is very much likely, with his help. Oh, of course, plausible deniability... from his heart... recent public support for AfD just a coincidence... etc.
