[#9403829]

Finlay it landed on PS4 today.

I'm bust with the training missions to remind me how to play and get use to the controls.

Do you get the big cardboard matte for your keyboard like with the original?

Is there a (rubber) keyboard add-on for PS4? If so I'm in!

Me too 🙂 no self centring on the joystick either

My son got a new graphics card and joystick for his birthday. I'm very tempted to buy ED now...

Is it as time consuming as the original? How's the general feel of the game? Is it basically the same eg trade a bit, fight a bit, spend lots of time just flying towards planets? With online, do you just get slaughtered by players with fully powered up ships when you're starting out with your Cobra mk3?

Who remembers the final mission where you had to carry the details for the Thargoid battle plans to a place the other side of the galaxy and then each time you tried to travel to another system, you got pulled into hyperspace by the Thargoids and mercilessly attacked?

Ah interesting, so the tape version had less data (which would makee sense since it took about 15 minutes to load anyway).

We originally had the tapee version but then we got a floppy disc drive and a disc version of the game. The first mission was to destroy the stolen development ship. Then the second mission, which got you to Elite, was the Thargoid mission.

So far I'm still getting the feel to it, as of yet I've not been attacked but it's only just out so no massively powered up players. Seems it will be time consuming but it's that kind of game.

it is rather involved, yes. on pc at least it is all online play, though you can run 'open' ( everyone in together ), a solo session ( no-one but you ), or private ( it's just you and your mates ). meaning that stuff you do does get accounted for in the universe, but you won't encounter other players. so if everyone stumbles on the same trade route for gold between two planets and starts caning it, the price of gold at the destination will drop, for instance.
this gives you a chance to find your feet.
i need to get back to it. i have two weeks off in august and i'm almost hoping for rain.... 😳

Hope it's better than on PC. The ocean is a mile wide, but an inch deep.

I had it on tape on my BBC b back in the day. Next year I might be looking at 4 to 6 weeks enforced recuperation following an op so may give it a go...

There's a 13GB ED update dropped for the Xbox today. Wonder if it's related? Cross-platform?

Which caused much controversy considering originally promising offline play. I still haven't bought it for one reason or another, but it's down to £10 at times on Steam. Though I wonder if at some point you can only get anywhere by getting the Horizons pack, though that's cheaper now too.

I was an early backer for Elite Dangerous, having been a long standing Elite player over the last thirty years I might not always have had legitimate copies of the game on my Speccy or Amiga so I thought I ought to do the honourable thing and support the crowdfund to the tune of £100.

All told, it's pretty much exactly what I envisaged a modern interpretation of Elite to be. There's plenty of interest and you can play in sandbox or online modes. The graphics are beautiful, but the high contrast means that either you need to ramp up the anti-aliasing settings or switch to a 4K monitor/TV.

Well I've tried it now. I can see that I'd have loved it when I was a kid and it was certainly spectacular but I'm not sure I can dedicate the time necessary to it now, including watching lots of videos to work out trading, missions, etc

I've got my Cobra and running transport missions to build money up to kit out a fighter next. It's time consuming but you can play different mode including a fighting mode without joining the main game.

Bought it for PC in steam sale last week but not yet launched it. What controller you using? Not sure I care enough to buy a hotas style thing and my limited gaming is on the sofa with the PC attached to my TV.

Edit - also good to see from your picture of the cover that I paid £3 less for it in 2017 than I did in 1984!

You mean you don't start with a crap Sidewinder on PS4? Took forever to build up the cash for a Cobra on PC.

Top tip - never fly unless you have the cash to cover the insurance, you will cry, especially once you've got onto the bigger ships 🙂

You start with a sidewinder took a few missions to get the money for a cobra.

Random aside: I've been listening to some of the Doctor Who "full cast" audio books by Big Finish lately. One of the episodes was a blatant Top Gear pastiche, the premise was that they were filming a show called "Warp Speed" reviewing new space ships. Presenters were a politically incorrect lead called "Jeffrey," a sidekick known as The Ferret and so forth.

Anyway, one of the throwaway lines that cropped up from the James May character was "well, I think they make a mistake in moving away from the Cobra Mk3..."

If I remember correctly, only the disk version had the military laser as well, which made it a awful lot easier, you could basically blast apart most things when they were only a dot in the distance and then you're gracefully fly through the debris.

There is a solo option but it needs a connection to the Elite server but seems not PS+

When but no PS4 plans so more like never.

Star Citizen. Jesus that's been early access since before my daughter was born. Have they sorted everything crapping out whenever the servers get stressed yet?

Cougar, that must work out at about £3 a year then 😉

Another ED player here (on PC).

I love it. It does have a very steep learning curve though but is worth it. Haven't played for a few months as been riding my bike but will be back soon.

CMDR Wildc4rd in game, give me a shout if you want to team up for some RES Bounty Hunting. About 700 hours in game, since not long after it came out.

Seem to go through phases with games, currently Diablo III. My time with elite dangerous is a much love hate relationship. Love the combat, used to just spend hours bounty hunting and amassed a around 50 million in credits before getting too cocky and getting blown apart by an Anaconda - I was only a viper mkIV so didn't last long at all. Haven't played it since in disgust at my own actions 🙁

Fantastic game though if you have time 🙂

Is it possible to play ED online without becoming kiddy cannon fodder? I gave up on online gaming after respawn number 1000000000. I

Have they added a tutorial yet, or is it still "watch two hours' worth of videos?" I bought it on the Xbox a while back but don't think I've made it out of the hangar yet.

I had a quick play on the PC version when it was in beta. I was trying to work out the controls, managed to take off, then found the "fire" button before finding "thrust." The station's internal defences activated and shot me to ribbons, my inaugural flight was about five yards.

I've just picked D3 back up again, there's a new Necromancer expansion out which is very silly.
