I was just posting a bike ad on ebay and when i went to complete it says that the ad price is £140! because i have a reserve price.

that seems a bit steep for one, secondly if it sells would i then pay £140 + 10% ebay fee + the pay pal fee ? would i be better just putting it as Buy It Now?

Yes- Buy It Now with best offer set to refuse stupid low bids.

is it not cheaper to put the starting price as the reserve price? that is also less off putting to potential buyers

You'll still pay 10% eBay fees with Buy It Now. It's a final value fee, so it's charged on what it eventually sells for. How it sells doesn't matter.

More annoyingly, you can't post a Classified Ad in most categories.

I sold my Orange Five recently using Gumtree. Free.

Now owned by ebay and, strangely enough, not as user friendly as it used to be...
