Other way round.

Stuck in the house with a bad back for a month, I seem to have drunk 2 bottles of whisky, 4 bottles of wine and 8 bottles of ale over Christmas and New Year.
That's about my usual yearly total.
I'll have a dryish rest of the year instead.

There'll be whisky in the cream in your cranachan.

Might as well have a dram.

Tonight will be one of my "moist" evenings as I don't have to get up early or any of that schizzle.

Saturday will be a dry day though as I'm off to Manchester for the final round of the Revolution series & I'm driving so that takes any temptation away to have a drink during the day.

Sunday is the next challenge!

Only started as a filthy two-week cold meant I really couldn't face normal evening drinks of wine and beer. Realised I was about 14 days into the month and wondered how it would feel to carry on - not massively missed it but suspect it helps to know I will drink again in Feb (I've been happy with cordial and fizzy water but sometimes I want the taste or a cold beer or a glass of wine)

One psychological help for me has been drinking my evening drink from a wine glass. Somehow even when it's just fizzy water it feels different and special to have it in a wine glass.

Skipping back to the first page

I am cutting back specifically to lose weight and skipping 15,000 - 20,000 calories a week does have an impact in that.

How flippin' much do you drink? That's about 80 pints a week.

Or 23 bottles of wine, perhaps its the associated nibbles that go with the drink as well?

A damp Jan for me. Drinking every other night, due to work stress and other things that are going on.
Well done to the dry Jan folk though!

That's only 15 to 20 Kcal, a sip of Top Deck shandy I should think

I'm still dry, still feeling good, have lost a little weight and feel very positive, but...

...this month seems to be lasting half a life time and I've found myself counting down the days until I get my feet wet again with an evening of wine and tasty nibbles.

I'm quite enjoying waking up with a clear head everyday, and feeling more alert.
I intend to keep it going beyond January too.

Aye right, you're in Lanarkshire, deep in the heart of Buckie country!

From wiki -

Buckfast is very popular in Scotland, the sales of the product were monitored in 2014 by the Scottish government to see the "Buckfast Triangle" still stood. The test showed that the towns and cities where Buckfast was sold highest per Capita was: 1.Glasgow and surrounding areas 2.East Kilbride 3.Hamilton 4.Cambuslang 5.Coatbridge This test shows that many South Lanarkshire has the most areas in the top five showing it is very popular there.

knew you'd bite 🙂

quite fancy this tho..

A bakery that sold cakes with a Buckfast-laced ingredient is at the centre of a licensing investigation after the Ayrshire firm was criticised by alcohol awareness groups.

Patthead Bakery in New Cumnock sold a limited number of ‘cronuts’, a cross between a croissant and a doughnut invented in New York, with traces of Buckfast added to the filling.

I started early, so I finished early as well. Wrote a thing: http://pickled-hedgehog.com/?p=3642

The first sip was very disappointing. Things improved immeasurably after that.

i've only just noticed this thread, but hve had an intentionally moist january....

rather than the almost obligatory 2-3 beers at work i've declined. so far i've had only four Augustiners whilst at work. i've not even drunk all of the ales i brought back from the UK... think i've still got two left (down from eight).

and i've not had a "proper" smoke for over three weeks. my lungs feel better for it. no coughing up phlegm in the mornings, which is nice. i did however have a toke the other day and i felt wrecked.... which was quite nice, tbh. usually need at least a fat doobie to myself to feel something. (i'm not boasting.... it was just a revelation after smoking at least two or three a day for the last eight months!).

although i did have three beers with a friend in town today. i don't feel pissed, but i'm glad he had a concert to go to. didn't fancy another.

and so far this month i've lost over 5kg without even trying... long may it continue.

I was only ever aiming for a Damp January and I drank on fewer days than I was dry so that counts as a victory!

No obvious benefits though but I will try to maintain my lower intake going forward.

Marking 80 exam papers on Friday despair ended the month. Followed by steak Saturday and a nice bottle of red.

I'm hoping to keep it going for a bit yet, I did pretty much substitute booze for cakes and sweets so thats getting the heave-ho this month too.

There's currently 80 pints of Festival Razorback IPA and Pride of London Porter conditioning in the kitchen.

January really was dry, the Porter attenuated to 1.006 thanks to the new brew-fridge 😛

Well I did manage to cut back (most days) but got so fudging bored on weekends I would end up sinking a couple of bottles of Red.
In an effort to cut that back I switched to IPA as though I like beer I can't drink the sheer volume that would equal the alcohol content of 2 bottles of wine.
Look I know its screwed logic but its my brains logic 😉

No weight loss as seemed to be hungrier & now have a nice gash in my shin & a cricked neck from having slightly more energy so got up in the loft and cleared out all the old shite up there, galv water tanks are heavy and hurt when the swing into your leg 🙁

Is that a well done for injuring myself 😉 I'm glad to say I didn't equal your circular saw effort 😮
I was going to be good tonight but I've had a sod of a day so it will be Beer O'clock when I get home.

Oh don't you worry I will keep boring you with tales of domestic drudgery!

Did'nt register my interest in this in case I could'nt do it 😳 but I did it, and it was'nt too bad at all. Nearly popped in and got wine on the way home from work, but then thought nah. Will definitely be off the wagon Saturday though, birthday, so off down Cardiff for the day.
Oh and I've lost 6kg 😀

I drank Friday and Sat eve - a bottle of wine on each occasion, as I would have before dry January - I didn't really enjoy it and felt really crappy the next day. On Sunday even though I had Monday off I abstained, slept wonderfully, got up at 7, had done the day's shopping by 8:10 and had a productive day sorting stuff out around the house.

Dry January has shown me that a change was needed - at least to cut down considerably what I was drinking and nibbling - not just for my health, but for enjoying my weekends and being productive at work and home.

Well done to all who made the full month dry.

interestingly I had a couple of Malts last night after 31 dry days - maybe 4 units between the 2 drams - felt crap an hour later and worse sleep than all month- I think I will become an 'occasional user' 🙂

I'm still dry - I have a birthday do this weekend though so may have a couple of beers.

I'm definitely going to become a social drinker though, no more drink at home just for the sake of it.

It feels really odd (and nice) not walking the dog on a Sunday just get get rid of that 'brain-dead' feeling.

Anyone else keeping it going? Interesting to hear the adverse reactions to having a sup. Anyone embraced the booze again and thought the whole thing was the daftest idea you've had?

I gave up alcohol for most of a year at one point, TBH nothing much changed afterwards, I think I stopped drinking crap beer (Boddingtons/Tetley/John Smith/Worthingtons) entirely, but that was more a function of not going out every Saturday night, which meant not having to drink whatever crap the bar served.

I'd not describe myself as a heavy drinker though, usually/often split a bottle of homebrew with the OH in the evening, but rarely 'drunk'.

Well I had my first drinks of the year last Saturday. Friends birthday party - had 5 pints and a whisky.

Felt great at the time, but ruddy hell I felt rubbish on Sunday. I never properly got going. To be honest it took me 3 days to feel normal again.

Can't see me going back to my old habits, the new normal feels a lot better than my old normal. Occasional social drinker from now on.
